The Sigma Tau Delta provided students the opportunity to spread their voice through their writings at this conference held on April 13, 2016. Katie Riegel, a writer, poet, editor, teacher, publisher and blogger started off the conference with her words of wisdom. Through her message, we learn the importance of what she does and how to succeed as English majors in the world that we live in today. As writers and critics, what we do matters. In other words, we matter. In a world filled with the increase need of majors involving Math and Science, we start to see that English majors are not so common anymore. We face questions such as “What are you going to do with an English major?” People must see the importance of English majors and how English can effect us in a positive way. We must send our work to them in order to learn from our mistakes. Successful writers are the ones who keep trying. We can’t be lucky if we don’t try. The third rule she mentioned was to recognize systems because our systems may be unfair. We live in a society that is in a crisis. The problem is not within us. We must see the unfairness to be the change. For instance, the profit teachers make is minimin for the impact/effect that they have on the world/us throughout our life. If we recognize the system, we can be the one to break the rules and be the change in the world. The last rule she spoke of was for us to know our strengths. We live in a world were we have easy access to technology. If we follow these steps, we can create sustainability. We must take risks and learn new things in order to be the next wave to create what the world hasn’t seen. The Sigma Tau Delta Conference provided a feeling of a sense and place to English majors which is hard to find in the world that we live in today. Katie Riegel greatly influences me to spread the importance of English

Observing and analyzing detail is what kick started her fascination with Miss Dennis, who returned the favor by encouraging them to tell their own stories. That lead to another component she was taught: " 'What lies at the heart of good writing... is the writer 's ability to find his own unique voice... '" (98). Last was something Miss Dennis personally confided to Steinbach as she was struggling to find her unique voice saying, " 'Don 't be afraid to discover what you 're saying in the act of saying it '" (99). Although she still may struggle with some, these 'rules ' that Steinbach applies to her day-to-day and professional writing as best she can show the awe-inspiring effect one teacher had on the rest of her life and proves how true these words turned out to…

Looking back on the last four years of my life as a student of English, I have come to the conclusion that they were years well spent. Throughout these four years, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that is indispensable, and will be of great value to me in the career path I am pursuing. I take pride in the fact that I am not just an English major, but have concentrated in Advanced Composition and Rhetoric. This sense of dignity; however, was not always at the forefront of my mind or even considered, for on more than one occasion I had doubts concerning the process, and even became somewhat antagonistic towards the requirements I had to take to complete the process. These feelings of doubts and antagonism stem from the…

In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

In Sandie Friedman’s essay, “This way for Vampires: Teaching First-Year Composition in “Challenging Times” responds to Linda Adler-Kassner’s keynote speech at the 2012 Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWAP) conference that the use of vampires, also known as popular culture, should be banished in first-year English Composition. Ms. Friedman argues that vampires are good and help students think intellectually especially in challenging times. However, Ms. Friedman ignores the 2006 Spellings Report that was given and the information at the 2012 (CWAP) conference that students are deterred by the cost of education, see it as a waste of time, and are not proficient even after they graduate. For these reasons, I am against the use of vampires in first-year English Composition.…

As a matter of fact, the direr need for students to become accustomed with the literacy of Canada is greatly important. Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

In writing classes the most common first day question is whether or not spelling and grammar will count. Most commonly students focus more on how they are writing and if it is grammatically correct or not rather than writing their inner thoughts. Jack Connor in his essay, “Will Spelling Count?”, argues that writing requires meticulous efforts through his use of cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and division and classification. Connor displays cause and effect throughout his essay to show how different ways of teaching affect students performance and effort level. When Connor first began teaching he wanted to be a different type of teacher.…

“Diving In: An Introduction to Basic Writing” by Mina Shaughnessy In this article, Shaughnessy argues that educators need to start examining their own teaching and learning processes and the complex and contextual needs of their students, instead of focusing on what students can be doing differently. She points out that basic writing students are not behind and need to “catch up” to any particular level, but there must been a more effective means of communication needs to be established between the students and teachers (291). Shaughnessy presents four stages of development as a basic writer instructor and explains how educators move through these stages before becoming competent to teach basic writing. The first stage called “Guarding the…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
