Sigma Chi Farewell Speech

Great Essays
Worthy Brothers,

Thank you for taking the time to read my speech and for considering me as a recipient for the 2018 Chapter Balfour Award. Truth be told I was a little disappointed that more Seniors did not choose to run, however I know both Maxx and myself will represent the senior class well.

Looking back on my time in Sigma Chi, I never thought I would ever be in the place to even be considered for this award. I remember specifically at one moment my freshman year when I had a conversation with now alumni Ryan McQueeney. In this conversation, I addressed the RBC and stated that “In the fraternity there is a role for everyone, but my role will forever be the Club aspect of Sigma Chi.” This mentality was something that I prided myself on

What has Brian Grover done in his term to make not only the Lambda Omega Chapter better, but also others, as well as himself? To first address the least important part of this I will touch on myself. Outside of Sigma Chi I have actively involved myself in a lot of different ventures outside of Sigma Chi. The past two years I have spent my time serving as a Egenius for the Business Communications as I recommended by our Faculty Advisor Joel Whalen. Additionally, I have spent my time working with the DePaul Sales Leadership Program as an ambassador and just as as a mentor for a handful of new students who entered the Program. Furthermore, I have applied myself outside of the classroom by working for the DePaul Bookstore for two years, Umpiring for two years at Live to Support Chicago, as well as two internships at Live to Support Chicago and PepsiCo. All of these ventures have been made possible by the multitude of skills I have learned as being a member of Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi has allowed/forced me to improve my public speaking skills, leadership skills, as well as working with an array of different personalities. While these are all skills I am always looking to improve, because as we all know we are always looking for the White Cross, I know that I am directly able to my ‘successes’ as a direct result of the help I have received from Sigma Chi these past 3 ½ …show more content…
In my time in Sigma Chi I have held two official positions, and I would say one other position unofficially official with two other members; Austin Reed & Chris Philipps. The first unofficial positon I “held” was PR Chairman. This came about as going in the Summer of my Junior year to be blunt, I was incredibly displeased with our presence or rather lack there of on our social media platforms. At the time we only had 236 followers on Instagram and roughly 670 Facebook followers. I reached out to Austin Reed and that summer I hounded the groupme almost daily for photos and other ideas to allow us to find success on our platforms. By the end of the summer our Instagram following grew above 550 members, and our Facebook grew to over 850 members. This turn around was something that required persistence and consistent posting and I owe a lot of this to Austin Reed and Chris Philipps, but from that time on the precedent was changed from PR being a blow off position, to a highly coveted position in the Lambda Omega Chapter. The next position I held was this past Winter & Fall Terms as our Recruitment Chair. In this role I was a productive member of e-board in a period where we had a lot of turmoil and perhaps the ‘slipperiest slope’ of our chapter. As Recruitment Chair I planned two Recruitments that had very few hiccups with all events/items being taken care of days/weeks before the events began. While I was very lucky to

David Wallace Foster’s Kenyon College Commencement Speech is extremely successful for a multitude of reasons. It is not so much inspirational or revolutionary or epic, just simply honest. His speech is blunt about what people will face in their life after education. That adult life is boring, repetitive, trivial, tiring. Yet despite being adult life being unsatisfactory, Wallace always says it will only be those things because of your perspective.…

Throughout reading “Commencement Speech, Kenyon College”, I found this short story very inspiring to read as I found myself doing more research on this essay because I was so interested in it. Reading this once through I got the feeling of more of a pessimistic and lower toned feeling sine suicide is mentioned and reading the bio notes of David Foster Wallace and how he suffered with depression and committing suicide I realized this was more of a final speech of what he wished he could have still in himself. “It’s the matter of my choosing to do the work of show how altering or getting free of my natural, hardwired default-settling” (309) I believe in this statement with my whole heart, to me I believe that I used to get just go through the motions of life and wasn’t really living but recently one of my friends came to me and told me she wanted to kill herself because she didn’t see the point in life and though I don’t know if I ever could get to that point, I told her that every day we would hang out, every day we would make the most of everyday and every day I would remind her why life was so wonderful to live and how lucky we are for this opportunity.…

Through student council I have worked closely with my teachers and advisors to better my school by bringing our student body together for events such as pep rallies and competitive games during homecoming week. I have also made great friendships with peers outside of my usual classrooms which has helped shape me into a well rounded person. With National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, we have bettered our community through projects such as a can food drive and buying Christmas gifts for children in need. National Honor Society has also helped me gain connections with our local Special Olympics where I volunteered this past year and plan to continue volunteering. I want to join this great organization because I seek to inspire boys and girls and to make a significant impact on their growth. It is remarkable to see that so many influential leaders are members of the same organization and that speaks volumes about the culture and teachings of the Fraternity. These men were determined to seek change at the grassroots level to fix a broken America that has benefited and impacted many – including me. They stood at the forefront to uplift, empower and advocate for a community that has had their voiced silenced throughout the history of…

During my sophomore year, I heard about elections for the president of National Math Honor Society, or NMHS. I was excited as I saw this as the opportunity I had to instill a love of math for my fellow high school peers. Since I had been at the top of my math classes during high school, I anticipated an easy triumph for me, so I imprudently stood idle while my opponents campaigned. Unfortunately, after the voting by my fellow students, I learned I had lost to a junior. I shrank down in my seat and tears formed in my eye, showing my humiliation.…

Organizing chapter events and meetings, participating in a community service event on campus, attending mathematics competition training sessions, and helping with recruitment efforts are just a few highlights from my chapter involvement.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
