Sierva Maria Character Analysis

García Marquez’s book, Of Love and Other Demons portrays subjects such as magic realism, reoccurring motifs, and character oppositions. Sierva Maria and Father Cayetano Delaura are two characters that work in opposition to each other. Both of their worlds are parallel, with the exception of their love. Sierva Maria and Delaura are perfect opposites for various reasons; their differences are the roots of their hardship, and their love is revealed as a forbidden one. To begin with, Sierva Maria and Father Cayetano Delaura differentiate in their social status, religious regime, and age. Sierva Maria is an American born marquis and Delaura is a priest. During that time, it was socially unacceptable for these two classes to mix, except when the priests gave mass to a marquis or took their confessions. Even today, that type of relationship seems improper, since the priests’ make a vow to marry God. That is Delaura’s problem; he is prevented by his religious vows to run off and marry Sierva Maria. They contemplate in escaping but do not take action. One day, Sierva Maria begged Delaura to stay but he managed to escape. As stated, “[…] Sierva Maria forced him to choose between staying and taking her with him” (136). Delaura’s plan was an “immediate solution other than flight” (136). Such as, telling the Marquis to take Sierva out. However, Cayetano failed on the two occasions he attempted. In addition, Delaura sneaking into Sierva Maria’s room from a tunnel caused Martina (a prisoner) to overhear where he came in and out. So Martina escaped using his access. Consequently, the tunnel was closed off and Delaura could not reach Sierva Maria. Apart from their differences, death made sure of separating them when Sierva Maria
