The outbreak of Ebola in western Africa resulted in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) pronouncing a ban thwarting Sierra Leone from its games. Sierra Leone has to cancelled all games within and without the country in August 2014 in an effort to minimized if not help stop the spread of the Ebola virus epidemic in sierra Leone. The Ebola stigmatization was also extended to Sierra Leoneans players who were even overseas. A typical evidence was one Michael Lahoud playing in the United States. Though he play for his team but the opposing player after the end of the match refuses to swap shirt with him. Some even refuse shaking hands and some players were restricted to certain areas of the stadium for fear that they might be carrying the virus. The Sierra Leonean national team was deterred by CAF from hosting home games and all players must be foreign based. Only after Sierra Leone was declared Ebola-free was the ban lifted in December 2015. (Liberia's ban ended in September 2015, and Guinea's in January 2016.)
