Sierra Club Research Paper

The Sierra Club is a nonprofit grassroots environmental organization founded in 1892 in San Francisco by John Muir. The club was created at first as an association to protect the Sierra Nevada. Though not too long after, professors from the University of California, Berkley and Stanford helped John Muir found the organization, appointing Muir as president, and using the Appalachian Mountain Club as a model. The organization heavily focuses on the preservation and exploration of the earth’s ecosystems. The Sierra Club is the one first environmental organizations in the world on such a large-scale. Along with aforementioned Act, The Sierra Club also assisted in the passing of the Clean water Act, Endangered Species Act, and a diverse amount of other legislation to help further advocate environmental protection. Despite being typically associated with the progressive movement, over-time, the club has shifted their agenda to ideals such as green politics and bright green environmentalism. As a result of this, The Sierra Club is highly focused on advocating ways to create a world in which earth transitions to one hundred percent clean source of energy and restore destroyed ecosystems while protecting current environments. The club sponsors an extensive outings or hiking program throughout the country, as well as public talks, films, and exhibitions (New World Encyclopedia, 2016). Due to the organizations enormous size, the club is managed by a Board of Directors with 15 members along with the president who is annually elected by said board.
