Legends on Ice Dreams come true if you work for them. All of these amazing hockey players had to start somewhere. They worked to get up to this level and now we all know them as the Greatest Hockey Players of all time. To start, Sidney Crosby became the youngest captain in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007. Starting from a young age, Crosby was able to skate due to his father also being in the NHL. By the time he was a sophomore in high school, his numbers had skyrocketed and “gained attention from ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.” (“Sidney Crosby” 1). “Howe’s total professional career record stood at 975 goals and 1,383 assists.” (1,049 in the NHL). (“Gordie Howe” 1). Further, Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and was given the very first NHL lifetime achievement award. Howe worked his whole life in hockey and it paid off once he made it to the NHL, but he wasn't there. He set the career record for goals and assists in the NHL. On the contrary, Martin Brodeur is the the best goalie in the NHL. Brodeur got drafted into the NHL in 1990, being a first round pick for the New Jersey Devils. He was the top rookie that season, having only 2.4 goals against per regular season and 1.95 during playoffs. “In 1994–95 he helped his team win the Stanley Cup championship.” (“Martin Brodeur” 1). He also became the 2nd goaltender in history to score in a goal in a playoff game. After this he led the Devils to 2 more Stanley Cup wins. In addition, Martin was also a part of the Canadian Olympic team, he won the gold medal twice, and helped them win the World Cup Championship. He played his 1,030th game in the NHL yet again, passing another record. He then started to fall off the goalie chain, becoming the back up, and he realized it was time to retire. “He holds the record for 40-win seasons (8) and most consecutive 30-win seasons (12).” (“Martin Brodeur”). He first started in the St. Louis Blues office but then came back home to work in the New Jersey Devils office. He was then inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Brodeur knew being a goalie in the NHL would be a difficult thing to do, but he put his work towards it and was known as the best goalie in the NHL. Lastly, Alex Ovechkin was playing at the highest level of hockey in Russia at the age of 16. Ovechkin came from a well-known family: his mom, a two-time Olympian, and his dad, a professional soccer player. He was the first pick of the 2004 draft and went to the Washington Capitals. He made his NHL debut in 2005 and scored over 106 points and was awarded the rookie of the year.
