Sidecar Open Band Jams Analysis

Sidecar Open Band Jams on Tuesday nights at Shady Katie’s has led me to many musicians, far and near and exposed the collaborative world of open mics. After traveling up for a little over a year, the final night came and went out with bang. Familiar faces such as hosts Jake Falana and Josh Mayer, Rob Sankey, Maureen Martian, Smashing Saturn, Katie McCorry, Billy McHattie, Josh Maddux, Sean Christie, Tony Schott, Olivia Burton and Stan Lobby joined Shady’s final featured artists to show the stage love one last time. This would also be the first and last time I’d experience new artists at Shady’s, provided by Stay Gold.

Unsure if this was the first time this feature has been to Shady’s in the duration of the Open Jams but he well received. Ami Yares delivered a solo act with his acoustic guitar and harmonica. The Philadelphian musician appeared to have influences of Johnny cash and Bob Dylan tossed in. It seemed it was a heavy influence for a majority of musicians that I’ve seen at Shady’s. “Meridians” was an honest display of his musical influences. Yares has a warm soft-spoken voice accentuated by the bright balanced hums of his guitar. |Utilizing the harmonica at the same time provided another timbre. His multitasking created a little folk

Between his vocals and acoustic guitar, the emphasis on his lyrics aree deep and rich. His original song “Vagabond Heart” a growing personal favorite, flaunts his range. From a soft spoken serenade to a powerful wane in a long breath. On thing Falana and Presner have in common is their incredible reach – it’s enough to give a girl Goosebumps. Mayer adds the person to the intimate atmosphere. Seeing Presner sitting on one of the bar stool on stage, basked in warm lighting, you can see him sharing parts of himself, in by his lyrics and the mesmerizing strum of each string. He is a man truly in love with his

Summer Twins Review: A Dreamy Dance Party Kicking off Valentine’s Day weekend with great music is not a bad way to dive into the holiday, for couples and singles alike. This last Friday, February 12, Summer Twins performed at Acerogami, Pomona, CA, joined by Veronica Bianqui. The entire event had a drinks-with-friends vibe, framed by the venue’s exposed brick, low lighting, projected music videos, and a few heart-shaped balloons at the stage. The beauty of smaller venues is the level of comfort they create. Conversation before and after the show flowed easily, from excitement about the performers to stray cats and operatic voicemails.…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

According to Jessica Balmer’s “That’s My Jam”, culture jamming is the act of taking “dominant cultural messages” in mainstream media and creating a parody which in turn exposes the real meaning of the messages. Culture jamming can take many forms such as recreating a companies logo, deforming a billboard and fashion statements. An example indicated by Balmer, is the Black Label beer’s logo being replaced with “Black Labour, White Guilt”. The intentions of culture jamming is to bring awareness to society about “dominant cultural messages” and to create a progressive change in media. This form of media tends to make society think outside the box when viewing a popular ad, by looking beyond the ad to reveal the message behind it.…

Both Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin transcended the limitations of words through manmade sounds. At the end of “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” Smith interspersed sound with phrases. While she hummed “mmmmm” to demonstrate frustration with the speaker’s situation, Smith wove in phrases like “I felt so low” and “not one penny / And my friends I haven’t any.” She portrayed the bitterness and nostalgia people feel after loss.…

Cowritten by Childish Gambino and Ludwig Göransson in 2012 for Childish Gambino’s album Camp, “Heartbeat” narrates a dysfunctional relationship that cannot be salvaged despite the poetic voice’s desire to do so. [con’t] “Heartbeat” is visibly a song full of confusion, which the narrative voice decides to pass on to the reader as well. Instead of offering full insight for the reader, the reader is forced to follow along with the confusion and stress being felt by the poetic voice. With lyrics such as “I wanted you to know” (Childish Gambino 1) and “I read his posts on your wall and I feel sick” (Childish Gambino 61), the usage of the words “you” and “your” makes the reader infer that the song’s audience is meant to be the female subject. With this…

“Blank Space” written by singer/songwriter Taylor Swift was a huge success in 2014. The song brought already famous Taylor Swift more praise as it topped the charts and helped her become the first woman to top herself at the number one spot on the “Hot 100” (Trust). The song is written with a depth of heartbreak, attitude, mischief, and hope. Although sultry, and alluring at first listen, the song is about a woman who has been hurt many times in the past and is seeking someone to fill the void in her life.…

In 2004, the alternative rock music world was shook by the release of the song, “Alive With the Glory of Love” by Say Anything, with a catchy beat and an interesting backstory it quickly gained popularity and resonated with many listeners especially myself. The story of this song tells about the lead singer Max Bemis’s grandparents who were survivors of the holocaust and how through the challenging times they experienced they both found each other and let love be their escape and lasting hope. While the story of his grandparents was the key theme, it is also based on a short relationship the lead singer Max Bemis had at one point and even though it didn’t work out in the end it was the possibility of being able to share something special with…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…

Whether it be today, 20 years ago, or 50 years ago, getting your voice heard in the global sphere is troubling for younger generations.
