Side Effects Of Technology On Children

I am writing to you today as a concern mother as well as a citizen looking out for the future. Although technology has made tremendous breakthroughs for education, it is not the best option for children. The side effects of social media and access to the internet at young ages as well as adults is detrimental. Side effects include; loss of solitude, reliance on technology, easy access to negative information and an undeniable loneliness. We can not allow these children to adapt to these negative attributes caused by phones, tablets, and iPads or we will watch the demise of our future.
When you give a child a device such as a phone, tablet, or iPad, they develop an aversion to being alone. They have the whole world at their finger-tips with easy access to stay in contact. They become consumed by this need to be known and liked. Due to the incessant use of technology and social media the youth have developed this emptiness that can only be filled with updates on Facebook or Instagram. We are social creatures that need to stay in contact, but the most important form is human contact. We substitute and compromise to phone use and limit our contact to be only on a screen. We create the sensation we are missing something crucial and exceed our technology use to counteract the notion. “We build a following on Facebook and wonder to what degree our followings are friends. We re-create ourselves new bodies, homes, jobs, and romances. Yet suddenly, in the half-light of virtual community, we may feel utterly alone” (Turkle). Many people who use a mass amount of social media are too afraid to be themselves and feel as though when they use a screen “you have more time to think about what you’re writing. On the telephone, too much might show”
