Smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of death in the United States and it is very dangerous to people’s health. There are also many side effects to this action and the use over the years has led to many dangerous side effects such as cancer, halitosis, and heart disease. Nicotine and cigarettes have been around for a very long time though and in use since Native Americans grew tobacco. While there are people everyday trying to quit this habit, it has so many addictive factors, a lot of people struggle with it. Since smoking is so dangerous to your health, it amazes me that people still continue to smoke. One major part of my research was study the side of effects internally and externally. Why some people may say that smoking electronic cigarettes is safer, there are still many diseases that you can get from doing this. You can still obtain cancer from smoking this a lot and there are hundreds of other deadly chemicals inside of it that many people do not know (Cancer.net). The Cancer Prevention and Treatment Funds agrees though by saying “E-cigarettes have not been around long enough to determine if they are harmful to users in the long run.” There have not been around for as long as the traditional cigarettes making some of the side effects of this device still unknown. There are around six hundred ingredients that go into make a cigarette and when smoked create over seven thousand chemicals (American Lung Assoc.). At least sixty-nine of these chemicals are known to cause cancer too (American Lung Assoc.). The American Lung Association also says that “Many of these chemicals also are found in consumer products, but these products have warning labels. While the public is warned about the danger of the poisons in these products, there is no such warning for the toxins in tobacco smoke.” While all of that may be true there are proven chemicals that have been found in the traditional cigarette. The more popular ones are Acetone which is found in nail polish. Along with that is Acetic Acid which is used in hair dye. Some more well known ones are Ammonia that is found in your common household cleaners and Benzene that is found in rubber cement. On top of those four you can also find Arsenic, Butane, Cadmium, Carbon Monoxide, Formaldehyde, Hexamine, Lead, Naphthalene, Methanol, Nicotine, Tar, and Toluene. All of these chemicals come from products that should not be put inside the human body.
