According to the CDC “Approximately 2.5 million people have died from health issues caused by secondhand smoking”. The CDC also reports that “if a nonsmoker inhales smoke, it has an immediate effect on the heart.” Consequently, secondhand smoke has a worse effect on children than adults; if a child inhales smoke it can cause more frequent and severe asthma attacks. Research shows it can also cause severe respiratory infections. The Michigan department of human health and services stated that, “In 2009 in Michigan’s smoke free air law passed, making it illegal to smoke in restaurants, bars, and businesses.” Once this law was passed the number of smokers in Michigan decreased; this means there’s less of a chance that a nonsmoker will inhale second hand smoke. In addition, this shows that once tobacco bans are enforced, it helps to prevent more people from starting to smoke. People say that increasing tobacco bans isn’t effective, and won’t be prosperous. People believe that the penalties aren’t stiff enough, causing smokers to continue to smoke because they know they won’t have to suffer a harsh punishment. The bans aren’t intimidating enough to people that smoke. Furthermore, an increase of tobacco bans will just cause people to go smoke somewhere else; if people aren’t allowed to smoke in one area, they’ll just go somewhere else and smoke there. Moreover, tobacco bans can take freedom away from people, possibly causing issues with people who smoke; since they will be angry they aren’t allowed to smoke in great deal of places. The people against increasing tobacco bans say they’re ineffective, mostly because they believe the consequences aren’t strong enough. Smoking has caused so many health care issues and deaths, for decades. When cigarettes were first introduced to the United States many people believed that nothing was wrong with them; and that they didn’t affect your health at all. As research emerged it became clear that smoking isn’t healthy at all; and that changes needed to be made. It’s clear now, that smoking has many harsh health effects; one way to eliminate these would be to increase tobacco bans.
