Out Of Reality’s Touch Is he Gar Castle or is he Dr. Cedric Elton? The question is vivid in the minds of the people reading Rog Phillips’ “The Yellow Pill”. In “The Yellow Pill”, a character named Gerald Bocek questions Dr. Elton’s perception of reality by trying to convince him that they are in space instead of Earth. It is evident that the setting is on Earth; therefore, Dr. Elton’s reality is the truth.…
In "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", Rebecca Skloot provides an informational insider on the life of Henrietta Lacks- pointing out the ethical issues in Henrietta's operative. Henrietta, a woman who unknowingly had her tissue cells removed from her cervix by scientists were being used in wide-spread research. After reading "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", I started researching and came upon an article titled "Patient Safety: The Ethical Imperative". I began making connections that demonstrated and explained the problems that were present in the novel and in the article; however, many people want to argue that what is believed to be "unethical" isn't actually wrong.…
Evidence Base Practice does not remove the individual responsibility from the nurse and other healthcare providers. In fact, it is the nurse that has a great responsibility for being and advocate for the patient. He or she must work with the patient and allow the patient to exercise their preferences. Today’s savvy patient is very aware of their illnesses and want to be involved in making choices and want to be informed of what is available to them.…
Such decisions regarding patients with severe and deteriorating illness should be processed with respect to the patient’s condition becoming worse with time. Having an ethics board or a medical community to alleviate the pressure of a single doctor making a decision for a patient who is not able to act autonomously would allow for a treatment plan to be determined earlier. In Mary’s case, the court ruling prevented the doctor’s from acting to save her…
“Bitter Pill” is a TIME magazine cover story published by American Journalist Steven Brill in February, 2013. This long report has investigated the egregious billing practice by the hospitals and their executives, and the way how they are using the system in order to maximize their profits. In this extensive and pointed exposé of healthcare cost in the US, Steven Brill has documented several case studies of patients who received disproportionate hospital bills that had little relationship to the care provided in the hospitals. He pointed out some of major factors that contributes to this unjustifiable medical bills in US, e.g., the hospitals’ gratuitous Chargemaster rates, unnecessary laboratory tests, unjustifiable costs of medical items,…
Alcohol plays a big part in prescription drugs because the person who is taking them may not get the "high" they want to achieve a better high then the last time. Some may decide to add alcohol in the mix. Alcohol is a legal drug within its self because the more the consumer drinks, their driving ability is impaired, it is hard to walk/talk, it can make the person sad or angry. The relationship between prescription painkillers and alcohol goes hand and hand because they both give you the same effect and can even lead to death.…
Veterans are a special population of individuals who have fought for the betterment of the American society. I chose to explore the veteran population because often they are neglected and not highlighted for their contribution to the society. Based on the research I have conducted I realized that prescription opioids are one of the drugs that are frequently abused among veterans while on duty and off duty, because of the problematic issue that they experience which results in many deaths per day due to the constant trauma that veterans experience. I chose to use detox treatment setting for veterans because it is effectively in combating the cravings and dependences of the drug by an eliminating it from the body. This treatment system is helpful…
In the United States there is a wide variety of nationality, culture and diversity. The medical field isn’t very different as far as the variety of culture differences goes. For my paper I choose the Amish culture. The Amish differ from my beliefs in many different ways. The medical care in the Amish culture differs from Amish community to community.…
At the beginning of my nursing career most of the medical terms I’ve come to use and understand I had while little knowledge about. Some of these terms I picked up in practical experience and other I learnt in lectures. One of these terms has come to be very important in my nursing career and that is medication management. At first my understanding of this concept was very limited and I didn’t understand many of the different factors that all came together to make up the whole. Over my studies this understanding has evolved and become a core part of my nursing practice.…
The care pediatricians did not consult with anyone, instead they just did what they thought was best. In the case of the Baker’s, Dr. Walsh abused her power and didn’t consult with anyone in higher power to see if what she was doing is correct. Instead, Dr. Walsh allowed herself to tell the Baker’s what she thought would be best but failed to enforce what she said would be best, so therefore, it was merely a suggestion. Since Dr. Walsh is a professional, “the professional must assume a deeper responsibility than the client. It is perfectly excusable for…
This article is about the hidden side affects in the medicine we take. Most Doctors don't really know all the side affects in some medicines either. The Doctors and Pharmacists that do know are not always going to tell you all of the affects in the medicine you will take. If we knew all of the affects no one would want to take the medicine. If no one buys the medicine that means no money for the doctors and the people who make the medicine.…
