One enhancement that was evident in Siddhartha’s journey was meeting his childhood friend, Govinda, throughout the story. When Siddhartha would transition into a new life, Govinda would always appear to advise Siddhartha. But, Siddhartha realized the advice given from Govinda would never suit his beliefs. After Govinda has given advice to Siddhartha at the river, Siddhartha discloses that “The wheel of appearances revolves quickly, Govinda, where is Siddhartha the Brahim, where is Siddhartha the Samana, where is Siddhartha the rich man(Hesse 76)?” Since Govinda had given Siddhartha advice of what one would wear in a pilgrimage, Govinda forced Siddhartha to consider his place within the world. With the realization of what Siddhartha’s purpose was in the world, Siddhartha enhances his knowledge of himself. In this awakening due to Govinda’s advice, Siddhartha comprehends that there is no description to fit him which is leads him closer to enlightenment. Not only did Govinda’s aid give Siddhartha awakening, Siddhartha used the spiritual peace that the river gave to finally accomplish enlightenment. For Siddhartha to accomplish this final enhancement, Siddhartha would have to listening to the river.
