Sicko Movie Analysis

After watching the movie “Sicko” by Michael Moore and reading Understanding American Politics by Stephen Brooks I seem to be baffled about what a lot of foreigners are when referring to American politics and society. One being, our government and how hypocritical they are for instance, The Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement And Modernization Act passed in 2003, In “Sicko”, the legislation allowed drug companies the freedom to charge what they deemed fit. Looking at it from every angle possible still would not explain how that was to benefit anyone but, the drug industry. Furthermore, how is it that America is on the other side when it comes to health care and social programs, In “Sicko” countries: Canada, France, Britain, and Cuba have …show more content…
In France, the government provides free health care, free education, including college, free childcare and a great deal of government assistance services. In “Sicko” He interviewed several Americans living in France, they all agree that France is all about family values. A true government that is “ for the people and by the people”. Additionally, the fact that the people of France have grasped this concept and excepted that people who are better off help those who are in need, embodies American Exceptionalism without contradiction. I will say that I did not detect materialism nor religiously, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In “Sicko” a British General Practitioner who works for the National Health Services (NHS), a state ran managed health care system was interviewed he speaks about how he understands if people are wanting three or four million dollar houses and having several expensive cars that they would need a system that could provide them with that type of income, but for him and his family he is more than pleased with his financial stature and the system he is in. A doctor displaying such virtuous was humbling. Being an active catholic, I myself feel that religion should not be involved in the governing of people, the messages can be sometimes indistinct and the fact that it was not at all

What does it mean to be Australian? In Australian media, an Aussie is typically portrayed as a Caucasian, larger-than-life, masculine male who tames crocodiles for a living and lives in the bush; the vast, yet stunning landscape that occupies over 70% of the country (1). This is how Australians want their country to viewed in the national spotlight. The problem is, this is not at all realistic. Australia is becoming a very multicultural country, with the amount of residents born over seas approaching nearly 25% (2), and the indigenous population nearing 550,000; a number that only represents the people who choose to identify as indigenous (2).…

The UK a country whose National Health Services is a comprehensive publicly funded health care system, where there is no out of pocket payments was one of the greatest thing that I have ever heard. Even though growing up I never played for any of my hospital visit and emergency visit, I’m still irritated that not everyone is treated equally. When Moore went to France, he was laughs out of that country for saying some of the radicalness thing that are true about the American Health System. The fact that the government in quotes, does your laundry, doctor house calls don’t cost a thing, and how you get so many days off after given birth, makes me thing is America doing anything right. Moore made a couple of good points when he pointed out that the U.S. gets free education, library, parks, public transportation, but is that enough to make up for us not having a good health plan.…

The poor in American Society are the victims of the social theory referred to as CONFLICT THEORY. The theory explains that the social STRATIFICTION SYSTEM is not functioning properly and the rich benefit more from the governmental decisions at the expense of the disadvantaged, those who rightly need the assistance. This theory is shockingly apparent in the Frontline documentary “Poor Kids”. This film follows the lives of three families’ struggling to deal with life’s most crippling situations the best way they can. Issues are represented in visual texts through manipulation of visual and persuasive language by a director, in order to present their perspective. Sicko, by Michael Moore, is a documentary that investigates the corrupt relationship between HMOs and the United States government, and while doing so, highlights the way in which HMOs and drug companies buy politicians’ support and then use the media and their bought political power to dismantle anyone who attempts to expose or oppose them. The file footage, facts and statistics, and anecdotes employed in the documentary assist in exposing the mass corruption that runs rampant in the American government and media, positioning a viewer to see it for the bribery and selfishness that it is, and in…

Government functions to promote the well-being of its citizens; this includes promoting health care in a manner that will best promote the welfare of its citizens. Since health care is very regulated, it does not follow the laws that model a free-market economy. For this reason, instituting a health care system in a capitalist society causes unintended consequences that lead to injustice. Injustices stem from a commercial incentive for research and drug development, a vast consumer surplus, and limited access to care. The government is a reflection of the citizens they serve.…
