Sickle cell anaemia can be diagnosed by blood test to check for defective haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of vertebrates.

. Antenatal screening
Screening for sickle cell anemia is recommended for pregnant women's if the test comes out positive they offer there partner a test & if it comes out positive doctors determine that there is one in four chance that their baby will have sickle cell anemia.
Newborn screening
All babies in UK shortly after birth are offer a screening test as part of newborn blood spot test.
