Julian Melchiorri: The Hunger For The Present World

Superior Essays
Throughout decades, humanity has desired “better.” The world has looked through the lens of, “how can we make this even greater?” The hunger for new innovation is a driving force for the present world, always furthering new discoveries and brightening the lives of generations to come. What fuels this hunger, however? People from different countries all around the world have been given a spirit of creation and desire to use their creativity to further society. As the humanity advances, so do the minds of upcoming generations, which in turn leads to more innovation in several areas of life. Julian Melchiorri, a graduate from the Royal College of Art felt this hunger to innovate his creativity and new ideas into the present world. Intrigued by recent discoveries in biology and material sciences, Melchiorri took it upon himself to explore the field of photosynthetic materials to bring the “efficiency of nature into the man-made world” (Melchiorri). As he poured time and effort into his research in the lab, Melchiorri reached a breakthrough. Through a combination of silk proteins and chloroplasts, he had created the world’s first man-made leaf: the Silk Leaf. The leaf is able to “breathe” air just as natural plants do, producing oxygen and glucose through artificial …show more content…
Because of past issues with artificial photosynthesis, the ability to keep the Silk Leaf “alive” is something to keep an eye on. There is no promise in self sustainability of the chloroplasts within the leaves, so this means that there must be a large source of leaves if brought into space. If used for architectural purposes, the Silk Leaf must be easily replaced because of its inability to self sustain. If used worldwide as Melchiorri has hoped, there must be a mass supplier of these leaves to provide considerable amounts to be practically used. Although usability is incredibly simple, the dependability of the leaf is not up to

The most impactful books are those that bring world inside of them to life in vivid detail. In Hope Jahren’s “Lab Girl,” the world brought to life is our own. However, rather than conveying a human-centric story, Jahren focuses on an often-forgotten character: plants. Jahren is a geochemist and geobiologist, and “Lab Girl” is a cross between a memoir and a textbook explaining the intricacies of plant life. The most memorable excerpts are those where plants are personified, from the stories ingrained in wood to the miracles of the resurrection plant.…

When I first started research for a bill that I agree with and a bill that I do not agree with I started getting overwhelmed. I could not believe the amount of bills that need to be reviewed for such a short legislative session. I just just started looking at the bills by subject instead of trying to go through each bill to determine my choices. This task still proved daunting because some of the bills actually had duplicates filled by different legislatures that read exactly the same. But, I did find one bill that I did agree with and one that I did not necessarily agree with its purpose.…

In this study, the effects of both varying temperatures and light intensity upon the photosynthetic rate of spinach leaves were observed. Using the ‘spinach immersion’ technique, the rate of photosynthesis under various conditions was quantified by observing the amount of spinach floating on top of a sodium bicarbonate solution. The sodium bicarbonate solution simultaneously supplied the spinach with carbon dioxide for use in photosynthesis, and caused it to sink. When the leaf underwent photosynthesis and produced oxygen gas, the leaf floated to the surface. It was hypothesized that an increase of either temperature or light intensity would lead to an increased rate of photosynthesis, to a degree.…

In this day in age, people induce a high dosage of toxins and environmental pollutants due to a rapid increase in industrialization, production of smoke, emission of automobile, man-made landfills and other man-made innovations. Fortunately, these toxins can be filtered out due to one of NASA’s spinoffs, Arocide. More than two decades ago, NASA-funded scientist were in the search of such technology that would help grow food for long term missions. The downside was that it was a sealed environment, perhaps they needed something that would grow food and get rid of ethylene, which caused the plant to die inside of ripen in space. Marshall Space Flight Center’s space product Development program collaborated with the Wisconsin Center for Space Automation and Robotics and together invented a device that inhaled ethylene and is oxidized into water and carbon dioxide.…

José Martí was a Cuban author and political leader who fought for Cuban independence from Spain and the unification of the western hemisphere as a single “America”. In his work, Our America, Martí maintains that people, in order to succeed, need to transcend the idea of living separately, and adapt the mentality that they are stronger when unified as one like-minded country. To accomplish this, Martí alludes to other events around the world as references to prove why embracing unity would benefit people. He incorporates imagery with metaphors, including personification, that engage and inspire his readers, and applies parallelism to compare the actions of the honorable man and the petty man, which further reinforces his point by appealing to people who desire to be honorable.…

Aleksei Gan believed that since most people are joined through labor, technologies’ of individual branches of production would form a united social technology, accurately and concretely. Constructivism took artists and architects, and turned them into Constructors. This caused them turning away from aesthetic or speculative problems in art and instead focusing on the fusion of art with everyday life in order to create the desired functional system of design.
