In the movie Sick Around the World, researcher T.R. Reid travels around the world to see how other countries have established their healthcare. The countries being evaluated are the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Taiwan and Switzerland. These countries are all capitalist democracies and all have a very different healthcare system. The purpose of this movie was to evaluate the different healthcare systems, see how they differ and see what the United states could be doing better.
The first place on Reid’s exploration was the U.K.. He found that in the U.K. they have a government-run National Health Service also known as the NHS. Through this healthcare, everything is funded through the taxes that people pay. In the U.K. everyone uses the NHS. Doctors here don’t even make half as much as doctors in the US. Reid's journey then takes him to Germany, the country that invented the concept of a national health care system. In Taiwan every person has a smart card that pays their bills and hold their personal information. The government collects the money from this then distributes it to the workers. Although, they are not spending enough money to keep up the health care system.
