Patrick deWitt’s The Sisters Brothers (2011): a satirical deviation from the cowboy western genre “The Wild West has always enticed the readers’ imagination” (Vanja 128). This research paper explores the context of Patrick deWitt’s The Sisters Brothers (2011). DeWitt’s use of a “stylized abstraction of western speech” (Vernon 1) offers its readers a respite from everyday life. Although it follows the traditional scheme of a cowboy western genre, the novel has certain innovations of its own (Vanja 130). The novel is narrated in a gritty 19th Century western speech, which although is sharp and distinctive, allows the story to not always be serious yet not always be funny, making the novel entertaining.…

Eight-eighty-seven seventy-one,” Coach Morris said to me. “Look for the outside receivers and tell them to get out of bounds to stop the clock. If they don’t get out of bounds, hurry to the line and spike the ball!” After hearing those instructions from coach I trotted onto the field with 1:22 left in the Decorah football game. Since our defense held them on 4 straight downs we had a second chance and we were going to take advantage of it.…

I could feel the cold, crisp air seeping through my jersey as I watched our struggling defense. Who were jaded and bittered, letting up more than 28 points this game. It was springtime during the year of 2012, I was just about to start my summer. I was looking on the internet for sports to do in Kaneland, because I wanted to compete at a higher level. But I was not always comfortable with playing on a travel baseball team, but I knew this could be a great opportunity for me, so I took a risk and after all it, payed off. I asked “Dad would you think I would be able to compete and play on the travel baseball team” He smiled “Yes, but one thing I learned when I was young and playing baseball is; it is a game of mistakes, and the only way you can succeed is if you practice over and over to improve.”…

Paranoid schizophrenics often have false delusions and auditory hallucinations, causing them to see things-people or objects that aren’t really there or to hear voices no one else can hear. It’s difficult for schizophrenics to differentiate between their illness and reality. For the most part, they can’t. It was hard for my family to accept the diagnosis, but we learned to deal with it.…

Influence to the Tenth Degree On a rather cold spring day in March 1998, seven restless children found themselves in the driveway of their new home to big welcoming arms of their new set of parents and three new siblings. Like new dogs in a dog park, we ran up to each other and stared at one another, to get a feel as see how each of us were, 10 different personalities, some shy, reserved and others more blunt and outgoing. A melting pot of two different upbringings, cultures and ways of life, we all became one two years later and would be adopted into our forever home.
