TKAM: The Similarities of Siblings

Today, most older siblings are mean to their younger siblings. Maybe because they are annoying, or they are ugly, or you they are the bane of your existence, but nevertheless, older siblings have been mean to their younger siblings since the dawn of time. For example, from To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, main characters, Jem and Scout Finch, live in Maycomb County, Alabama in the 1930s. Jem is Scout’s older brother and even though they are family, he still is mean to her, puts her down, and does not even care about it. He yells at her like he is her parent or like she is inferior to him. This reminds me of my older sister, Kjirsten; half of the time, she is nice like a human being and the

For example, in chapter 12, Harper Lee wrote, “Jem was twelve. He was difficult to live with, inconstant, moody” (Lee, 1960, p.152). Later, she goes on to say that Jem would not eat and he would like to be by himself. This showed how he was very moody and very distant because he was not eating, was not hanging out with Scout anymore, and was being moodier and meaner. Kjirsten did the same thing around his age; she wouldn’t even talk to us sometimes or she would act like we were not there. Sometimes she would put her anger out on us and be mean to us when we did not do anything. Another example of their moodiness and them being distant is around school time. For Jem and Scout, they got to go to the same school for a couple of years, but when Scout was in the first grade, the first time she and Jem were at the same school, he told her not to hang out with him because they were in different grades. Then also when Jem went off to high school, he told Scout that they could only walk to school together. For Kjirsten, she told me during middle school not to talk to her at school when she was with her friends or teachers. During high school was a bit different, she did not want me to walk around with her when I was up at north campus, but I did not want to anyways. This shows how these two people relate because they are both moody and distant when it comes to school
