Patients with salivary obstruction caused by a sialolithiasis typically present with pain and swelling in the involved gland; the symptoms are aggravated by stimulation of salivary glands such as eating or even with anticipation of eating. Asymptomatic sialoliths can be present and are typically noted incidentally on physical exam or on radiographs. Submandibular stones present with painless swelling approximately 30 percent of the time and presentation with pain alone is less frequent. [15].
