The author of this primary source is Sam Houston. As the governor of Texas in the year of 1860, Houston was a participant in this case as he was delivering a speech. The speech given addressed slavery in Texas and secession in the era leading to the start of the Civil War. Speech In January 1944, a 17-year-old Navy seaman named Nathan Schnurman volunteered to test protective clothing for the Navy. He was told that it was safe he was just Following orders, he wore a gas mask and special clothes and was escorted into a 10-foot by 10-foot chamber, which was then locked from the outside. Sulfur mustard and Lewisite, poisonous gasses used in chemical weapons, were released into the chamber and for one hour each day for five days, the seaman sat in this noxious vapor, on the final day he became nauseous, his eyes and throat began to burn, and he asked twice to leave the chamber. Arek Hersh was born in Sieradz, Poland and was immediately taken to his first concentration camp when he was only eleven years old. Arek was taken to a camp called Otoschno, near Poznan, which was run by the Schutzstaffel. There were originally 2500 men but only eleven men survived. I feel that if a teacher orders students around they will be given less respect. If you keep them in line without being too controlling, they will be more effective listeners.
