Shrek The Musical: A Cinematic Analysis

When I began my sophomore year, I immediately began helping with Shrek The Musical. I knew into this show I’d be seeing all stages of production and many different styles of directing. Through this experience, I’ve learned that different directing methods work for different actors and while a lot of the show was well directed, there were points that if I were the one directing, I would have made different choices regarding certain scenes. Being on staff during the entire process, I know that I’m suppose to believe that every directing decision was the right one. But, now that I see the show up and running in its entirety, there are certain spots that I would have directed differently. An example that I felt could have been taken in a different …show more content…
It wasn’t the beginning of the scene that bothered me as much as when the song began. I felt that Hunter never fully reached the pain of his character’s past until almost the very end of the song. The song is called Farquad’s Ballad for the main reason as we are supposed to be paying attention to that character. However, it was very easy not to watch Hunter and watch the guards. I believe that the character doesn’t have to move in order to become the most interesting person on the stage. I think this wasn’t communicated properly between the director and the actors. While yes, the song was entertaining, it was entertaining for the wrong …show more content…
Even his facial expressions were not as entertaining as they could have been. If I were directing him, I would have told him to work on reaching his character’s past and bringing that pain to his face more. Yes, he was performing, but he wasn’t acting. As a director, I would have asked him to do some more research on this character and to really look at the lyrics of the song. Seeing Hunter throughout this production, I know he had the ability to grow, but because of lack of direction he could not grow with his character. Thus, there was a lost connection between him as an actor and the

In modern day Latin America people struggle for even the most basic of human needs such as water, sanitation, and food. Governments in many countries do little to help lift the people out of poverty and give way to a higher quality of life for the poor while letting companies with vast resources come into their country, take their resources, and in return do little other than pay a meager wage to those who labor for these companies. The systems that are put in place by forced democracy are meant to keep separation between the rich and the poor. Three movies that depict how these systems work, or don’t work, are City of God, Even the Rain, and Trinkets and Beads. These movies have commonalities that the people of Latin America deal with day to day like loyalty, poverty, drug trafficking, slums, and exploitation of the indigenous people.…

After hanging up from talking to my mother, I decided to take her advice. If I have to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show for class that it would the best if I was to actually experience the show, this culture, this step into the past, instead of just watching the musical on my laptop and thinking this is the strangest musical in the world. I looked up if there was even any showings still of this musical, and lucky there was one this the Nuart Theater, of course the midnight showing. The price was only $11, a price I luckily could afford as a poor college student. I called up a few friends, family members, and my roommate…

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love musicals and some of my favorites include: Wicked, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Footloose, and Phantom of the Opera, but this musical was barbaric. There was no excitement or emotion portrayed by any of the actors throughout the show; especially during the musical numbers. The one and ONLY CHARACTER who had enthusiasm, energy, and emotion was Tyler Smith as Buddy the Elf. He was constantly moving, laughing, smiling, cracking jokes, dancing, and putting effort into each and every movement he…

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…
