The Selective Service was created in the early 1900’s with the intent to draft men into the United States army in the event of future wars. When initially constructed, the draft was only open to men. Women were allowed to participate, but their roles were very limited. Over 100 years later, women have fought so hard to be recognized as equals in the military. They’ve come so far to prove that they are worthy. Every now and then, Congress poses the question, “Should women be required to register for selective service?” Although I understand that they would want to make sure that the amount of soldiers available are endless, I strongly believe that women should not be forced to enlist. This was because men have been the face of the military. When you think of the word “military” you automatically think of a male figure. I believe the draft should remain the way it is today. I believe that women should not be required to join the selective service for a number of reasons. The first being that there are a large number of male soldiers registered for the draft. The number of active duty soldiers is over one-million and counting. This number does not include women. Women should have the choice of whether or not to join the military. Not all women have the same mindset. Some would jump at the opportunity to defend their country while others are trying to take care of their households. The second reason I believe that women should not register for selective service is the rising number of sexual harassment claims in the military. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, approximately 15,000 cases of sexual assault were reported in 2016 alone. “…putting a woman on the Joint Chief ‘s would help the military grapple with rising sexual harassment issues” (McGregor 31-2). This is a statement that I agree with. Some people believe that if more women held higher positions in the military, it would help combat the issue of sexual harassment.
