The fight for equal rights between men and women has been going on, dating all the way back to 1848; many people don't realize that it is still going on. Men are still getting paid more money than many women with the same job, and the same skill level. On average, women are only getting paid $0.77 to man’s $1.00. Although $0.23 doesn’t make that much of a difference now, it makes a big difference in the long-run. “Women miss out on anywhere between $700,000 and $2 million in lost wages over the course of their careers, compared to male co-workers with equal education levels and job experience.” Women should not be earning less than men because women are often the primary “breadwinner” and often the only source of income for the family, they work just as hard as men, and they have the same knowledge and qualifications, so why shouldn't they be paid the same? With some women being the primary or sometimes the only breadwinner, not getting paid the same as men isn’t fair. Women have to make some sort of income for supporting a family, or even just getting through with a daily lifestyle. The amount of lost wages for women all adds up and it is disadvantageous for those who have to take care of a family or even just themselves. An example on this is the Sony hack, where Jennifer Lawrence, a well known actress, found out she was being paid less than her other male counterparts. In addition to getting larger salaries, the male actors are getting a larger percent of the profits, 9 percent, while Lawrence and other actresses get only 7 percent. This is not the only case of unequal pay; out of the 17 Sony executives that get paid more than $1m, only one of them is a woman. Additionally, 85 out of 100 of the top earners at Sony Pictures are men. The Sony hack shows how women who may work just as hard as men aren't even given the opportunity to get paid
