Should Women Be Allowed In The Military?

Improved Essays
Women have served in the U.S. military for generations yet they never had the chance to participate in direct combat-related jobs. As women in the U.S. military move into more combat-related jobs, the question remains whether this is a good idea. As of January 24, 2013, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta removed the military’s ban on woman serving in combat roles and on December 3, 2015, Secretary of Defense Ash Crater proceeded with Panetta’s request and completed this process (“Pentagon Says Women Can Now Serve in Front-Line Ground Combat Positions”, 2015). This has created a great amount of controversy between the United States armed forces. It is evident that U.S. military is striving to stabilize equality between the distinct genders, …show more content…
Many women's right supporters contend that the former exclusionary policy prevents women from gaining leadership positions and view expanding the roles of women as a matter of civil rights. Critics view such changes as potentially damaging to military readiness. Cleary this has become a contradictory issue not only between the military branches but also the soldiers themselves therefore; they have come up with certain arguments on why women serving in combat roles might complicate the mission along with arguments on why woman should be allowed to participate in combat related …show more content…
“No, it’s not all about qualification. I’m speaking as a female Army Iraq war vet. All the branches have different standards for females and males, because most women wouldn’t even qualify to be a part of the armed forces if they didn’t have separate standards. We’re built differently. The best woman is still no match for the best man. Women are generally great shooters but can’t run in 60 pounds of gear as long, hard, or fast as men. Military training is hard enough on men’s bodies; it’s harder on women’s. Now don’t mistake my words, I believe women have many wonderful strengths, and there is certainly a lot of work for women to do in the military yet being a part of infantry isn’t one.”- Army Staff Sergeant Victoria Halle (“Women in combat roles [Telephone interview].” 2016, November 16).

However, despite the struggle for equality, many women still find that they thoroughly enjoy their jobs in the military and they have continued to serve our country.
One thing that everyone we talked to seems to agree on is that we, as young women, can do something for these women. We can make a

As a modern, growing country America has supposedly overcome ideas such as strict traditional gender roles. Author Tarak Barkawi confronts this issue as he argues we have missed an area in our United States military. His article published in 2012 titled, “Equality in Army and Society”, harshly challenges the rules and regulations in the U.S army against women’s rights. Barkawi’s main point is, women do not have the same career opportunities due to traditional roles, masculinity in the military, and civilian ideas of gender roles. Barkawi states, “the army is one of the last redoubts of traditional masculinity”.…

Women have embraced having equal rights as men, but having equal rights also creates a demand of duties. The selective service should be no different. Women have proved they are able to perform the task that the military requires. In today’s society there are ways women can contribute that don’t involve combat. Recently I read an editorial published on September 16th, 2015 in The New American, in which, the author argues that women can and should serve in the military, but not in combatant positions (McManus). Warfare and military are not simple problems. Numerous lives are at stake and spending has ripple effects throughout our economy. Personally, my brother is in the United States Air Force and I really wish he were not. As an electrical engineer he would be paid more out in the civilian world, and, more than that, he does not need a guilty conscience for an organization…

By restricting women from all military roles, the military is also restricting them from full citizenship and proper training. Women suffer from the combat restrictions because they never have the same opportunities as males to advance or earn the same wages. Because of the lack of advancement, women also end up losing any kind of status; resulting in harassment. “Women and men alike applaud these changes and urged further reform. Critics, however, claimed that a feminist social agenda was hurting the military and national agenda” (Brannen).…

Education, is the primary method to attract more women towards the military. Recruitment of women needs to be done through educating women on the career opportunities that are available. Education alone will not change women’s views on the military, strong female role models within the military are equally necessary. As of 2011 females representation is at 14.5%, yet they make up only 7.3% of general officers (Harvey and Allard, 2015, p. 230). If the military wants to attract the best and brightest soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and sailors, women need to know that the opportunities exists for success.…

Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter summed this up by saying “‘there will be no exceptions,’….. ’they'll be allowed to drive tanks, fire mortars and lead infantry soldiers into combat. They'll be able to serve as Army Rangers and Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Marine Corps infantry, Air Force parajumpers and everything else that was previously open only to men.’”…
