Welfare is defined as the government giving people in need financial support so they can live their everyday life. SNAP is an acronym for the “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program” which helps low-income families and individuals buy the food they need to provide for themselves and their family. This money gets loaded onto what is called an EBT card, which stands for “Electronic Benefit Transfer,” which is used just like a debit card. The cardholder is given a PIN number which is used so no one can take their EBT card and use it. In 1961, Congress created a program that was designed to help both farmers and poor people. This program was called The Food Stamp Act. This program was an idea that was revived after being used during the Great Depression. During the ten to twelve years of the Depression, the first Food Stamp Program fed almost 20 million people at one time or another in more than half of the counties in the nation. This is the equivalent of three billion dollars in 2007 (Farming in the 1950s & 60s 1).

It is illegal for the government to conduct searches pertaining to the population that is on welfare. This isn’t only an invasion of the person’s privacy but also a violation of the Fourth Amendment. It might be humiliating to certain people to explain the reason why they choose to do the drugs that they do. The person could be taking some medications to help improve certain areas of their body that aren’t illegal and they would have to confess to it and be embarrassed (Drug Testing).
