Should We Respond To Stereotypes: Fact Or Fiction?

I walked into the half filled classroom in a daze. After long nights of restless sleep my body felt like a permanent zombie. I make my way around the line of desks. The sun beaming down on her long blonde hair suddenly wakens me. Her white converse spectacled with dirt has seemed to take ownership of the seat in front of her. I found comfort in her familiar stance, however I have never seen Lily sit like this before. I move closer and she quickly moves her foot and morphs back into her normal self. I can tell that something is bothering her. I know she is not telling me the whole truth when she tells me why she is siting in the back of the room. But I let it go, for now. I decide that class isn’t the place to discuss this summer, so I ease off on our conversation. After class the day quickly goes by. I laugh as my friends play small pranks on teachers, and celebrate the start of the end of high school. Before I know it, I am in my last class, moments before the bell rings. I think to myself, “I need to know what she is hiding this time.” I watch as she makes her way off the last rock and turns in the direction of home. I wait until her blonde hair disappears and walk out behind the tree to start making my journey down the rocks. I finally make it to the base of the lighthouse and exam it several times but have no luck finding the stone Lily took out. I begin to feel the stones with my calloused hands. The stones are wet from the mist. I look down and see that the tide is quickly moving in. I hurriedly move my hands around the creases in the stones. I finally find one that feels rigid, much different than the rest. I pull the stone out of its resting place and look inside its hallowed innards. Many of these stereotypes in Skloot’s book painted blacks as unintelligent and vulnerable and led to many doctors taking advantage of their patients.
