The US government should reduce defense spending because threats to global security have been decreasing, it creates anti-American sentiment, and the current costs are too high. The US should reduce defense spending because the sheer size of the US military cost a lot. America has over 800 military bases outside of its borders. Maintaining 800 military bases costs 100 billion dollars of taxpayer money annually. In comparison the department of Education only spends about 71 billion dollars annually (Harris). The US does not need 800 military bases abroad to show power. We have 11 U.S. Navy carrier battle groups. A single battle group can handle terrorism and piracy. Also, a single carrier group has enough nuclear weapons in its arsenal to turn any nation of the Middle East into a radioactive wasteland (Eddlem). The US has almost 400,000 military soldiers deployed in more than 100 (Baldwin). The US would still be number one in defense spending even if we make significant cuts. Economic interdependence reduces the risk of military conflict. At one time it was only possible to get resources by invading other countries. Now, trading is a cheaper more peaceful way of doing it. It is now cheaper to buy and trade resources than to seize them by force. As a result, countries now have less determination to declare wars for resources.
