Entry №4. Should we read “Heart of Darkness”?

“Heart of Darkness” is a very deep and complex novel that raises some very controversial issues. Scholars and professors have divided into two ‘camps’ according to what they think about the novel. Some say that it should be forbidden from being read, and some think the opposite – that this novel has to be read, studied, and analyzed. I tend to agree with the second opinion. In this entry, I would like to express my point of view and support it by some of the critical essays written about this book.
First, this book should be read because of its language. Conrad uses very complex phrases and it makes you think about the meaning of every sentence. There are a lot of words, which do not tend to appear in many readings, therefore, one improves language skills when reading the novel. Also, it takes time to fully grasp on the meaning the author intended, therefore, the reader improves the ability to concentrate.
J. Hillis Miller argues that people definitely should read the novel, because it has a lot of various literary devices. Miller refers to it as a “tissue of figures and other rhetorical devices”(J.Hillis Miller «Should we read "Heart of Darkness?»» p. 465). He argues that there are four main devices which make the book very interesting and necessary to read. First of all, he says that there are more than one level in the story. The reader should be able to understand one level to get

The main character, Marlow, “pomises to pass this light or illumination on to his hearers.” » (J.Hillis Miller «Should we read "Heart of Darkness?»» p. 472) He wants to enlight the native people who are in the state of darkness, however, it turns out that the «narrator passes this light on to us, the readers» (p. 472) Therefore, implying that before reading this book we, the readers, are in the state of darkness, whereas after reading we learn and become

The novel is well rounded, but only falls short due to the accidental mistakes made by the author. Nonetheless, the fact that the book is followed by several sequels ultimately provides the possibility that the author fixes the issues within the next installments. However, despite being a well rounded novel the book at times is dragged out with unnecessary additional words where the author attempts to further describe her point. The reader at times will have to re-read several passages to understand the repetitive word choice and will have to overcome the lack of suspense within the novel’s key…

The figurative language deepens the book, and the style and craft drags the reader farther into it. The central idea of the book is well chose and described. The only thing that could have been improved is the figurative language. There is so much figurative language at certain parts that many readers do not may have trouble understanding it. Even with the confusing parts this book deserves a four out of five stars, because it is intriguing, but still has flaws.…

This is important, because it can give you a whole different angle at which you read this book. It is clear to see that this novel was well thought out, and took time to write. I had to imagine what the back story was, what is not being said, what is the true meaning of each word being written and spoken in the story. Here are a few things that caught my attention.…

Conrad and Tolstoy were giving their opinions about the past, present, and future of the human condition. They, like many others expressed that the new century would not be a great new change in the world, but instead a declension of humanity. The comparison and contrasting of these novels are just predictions of what the human condition will become. Tolstoy and Conrad were predicting that humans would become more cruel, more manipulative, causing everyone to live in a more harsh world. The legacy they want to leave behind to their readers is not just that humanity is becoming dark, but that this is what can happen if you don 't live your life right.…

Lewis respected that this book was trying to persuade the reader that you could interpret literature by the way it is read rather than it’s content. He added his opinion into the literary text but did not try to manipulate and corrupt the reader. He allows the “text to speak for itself”, whereas some critics usually simulate their opinion in their literary work. Lewis’ book provides great wisdom on how literature should be approached; it is “an eye-opener”. Rather than being an unliterary reader who wants details of the story without the art of the telling, you can experience the fullness of art through Lewis’…

“We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness” (43). This is one of many passages where Marlow uses darkness to tell his personal story about the journey he took through the Congo. This quote has both a literal and figurative meaning, where the reader must go beyond the text to truly comprehend the message of the author, Joseph Conrad. When reading this passage, it may appear that as Marlow and his crew go deeper into the Congo, the men become savage-like due to all the darkness, or evil, they are surrounded by. Joseph Conrad’s novella, Heart of Darkness, is a story about two men’s realization of their own inner evil.…
