Should We Increase The Speed Limit At 55 Miles Per Hour?

Improved Essays
Raising the Speed Limit Some say “speed kills” but is speed really the killer? The killer is the person who is behind the wheel. Much less just because careless drivers are the cause of deaths in motor vehicles, that does not mean society should lower the speed down to an unreasonable point. In Fact we should increase the speed and let the careless drivers deal with the problems they cause and not penalize the rest. Even though driving 55 miles per hour is more fuel efficient, the speed limit needs to be increased because people get to places faster and save time and accidents are only caused by careless drivers.
Driving at 55 miles per hour is more fuel efficient and the only way we have to worry about efficiency is because Back in 1973 the United States was in an oil embargoed by Saudi Arabia by five percent. As claimed by Tim castleman “our non renewable fossil fuels, like those used in gasoline, are dwindling at an alarming rate.” (US News) That is another reason why we should keep the speed limit at 55 mph, what will happen if we run out of gasoline? The best thing to do is conserve the most we can! As a matter of fact without fuel to run our

Even places like the back roads or country roads you should have your own ability to drive at a speed you sure you can manage without harming anyone that is on your way. That is where you should be able to go the speed you want not what you are told because what's the point of a place that is meant for speeding and you're going 55 miles per hour? As claimed by the article “do speed limits matter?” it is reported that “in 1973, when we had a 75 miles per hour speed limit on rural interstates in ten different states, there was 90 percent or better compliance with the speed limit in those states.”

Say you were going the posted speed limit and there probably would have been enough time to slam on the brakes. Reckless and pointless speeding takes lives every day, and I would hate to have to feel that pain everyday of knowing I hurt someone by pure carelessness. The impact on a person in a crash at 60 mph is equivalent to falling from a four story building, while the impact at 100 mph equals falling from a twelve-story building. While you’re speeding, you have significantly less time to check your surroundings. When a driver is speeding, other drivers have a hard time telling how fast they are going.…

Our book states that deviance is the violation of norms, rules, or expectations. Some of the ones that I am familiar with is speeding, breaking of the gender barrier, not partaking all of your roles in life. There are many other deviances that I can think of hearing about, seeing, or being a part of. Howard S. Becker said “it is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant”. This important because just breaking a norm is not the only important factor but how others will react to it too.…

In Nicholas Kristof article, “Our Blind Spot About Guns,” he argues, if we can make cars safer, we should be able to do the same with guns. In the article, Kristof states, “if we had the same auto fatality rate today that we had in the 1921, by my calculations we would have 715,000 Americans dying annually in vehicle (161).” With this being said he is trying to imply that cars use have high death rates, but the government added regulations which lowered the death rate. If we are able to add regulations to the cars we should be able to do it with guns too. Another thing is technology is so advanced that we should be able to use it to help regulate guns.…

Then the people feel guilty after they find out what they have done. Some people don’t care, and do the same thing multiple times, and need to be punished. Eventually they will learn there are consequences.…

The problem is formed by the thirty percent of drivers that travel at the same speed as the posted speed limit (Herbert 35). Those that do that are usually driving that way to simply avoid breaking the law, and while it is righteous in its own way, this causes a problem because the seventy percent of drivers will catch up to these drivers on the road causing more lane changes to pass (Herbert 35). If the speed limit signs were increased, then slower drivers would feel more comfortable driving faster and there would be less lane changing and passing (Herbert 35). While the facts used in the article “Speed Doesn’t Kill” are all from a reliable source, I feel that Matthew is relying on them too much. The paper would prove to be a lot more relatable if he gave more personal insight to develop a closer emotional relationship with those that read the article.…

On August 24, 2017, I made a decision to be completely aware of how precious life is. That day, I helped move my brother, Joe, into his apartment on the Central Michigan University campus. That day I came to a full realization of how reckless people are and how they completely disregard their safety and others. They take their lives for granted and don’t think about how their actions will or might affect others lives. These reckless people also rely on others to respond quickly enough to react of adapt to the situation they have been forced into to prevent loss of life.…
