Imagine that you’re a middle or high school student. It’s late at night, say around 10:45, and you just finished your homework. What would you do next? Take a shower? Play on a gaming device nonstop until you can barely keep your head up? Eventually, you go to bed. Your alarm clock goes off at 6:30 AM. It felt like you were sleeping for 5 minutes! You still pull yourself out of bed to get ready for school, which starts at 7:20 AM. Teens these days do not get enough sleep for their lengthy school day. They go to bed too late and have to get up early in the morning, so that they can get to school on time. School schedules should start later so teens can learn more easily throughout their day, and get to school without rushing in the morning …show more content…
9:00, maybe even 10:00? Most teens these days are going to bed between 11:00PM and 12:00AM. Some parents think that the lack of sleep their teen is getting is having a negative impact on their overall grade in school. The website www.smithsonianmag.com, an article states, “... in a statement, the CDC reports that an 8:30 start time would allow teenagers to get the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night, so long as they went to bed around 11 PM or 12 AM.” This would mean that any teens that go to bed earlier than the times stated above would allow them to get more than the recommended amount of sleep each night. A later start time plus teens getting the right amount of sleep can result in teens’ school grades skyrocketing. Some would say that a later start time can be rough for the parents of teens if they have to be at work early. Some teens have a habit of sleeping in and almost missing the bus on a daily basis. Parents don’t want their teens missing school if they have to leave early for work and are not present to wake them up. The parents don’t have to worry, though. Humans have a “body clock”, which is when your brain decides to wake a person up from sleep. If schools start later, teenagers’ brains can get them up naturally and parents wouldn’t have to worry about their teen getting up late. They will be ready for school just in time for the bus. All the parent would have to do is make lunch and leave a note to their child, or just …show more content…
Parents are always worried from the health of their child/children. One reason teens can do bad things is from sleep depression. On the website, www.startschoollater.net states, “ Insufficient sleep in teens is associated with obesity, migranes, and immune system disruption and with health risk behaviors including smoking, drinking, stimulant abuse, physical fighting, physical inactivity, depression, and suicidal tendencies. Sleep - deprived teens participate in more violent and property crime than other teens.” These things can be scary or extremely harmful to a teenager. Sleep is very important to one’s health. If parents want their child to be safe from all dangers, they need to make sure their teen goes to bed at a reasonable time each night. Parents can be happy their child is safe, and teens can be happy because they will not feel the hurtful effects of not enough sleep, and they can wake up refreshed. Sleep can be a rewarding thing, but not enough of it can be the biggest threat out

Teens are also wired to wake up later in the morning. Therefore, Kelley says, early wake times can cause teens to be short on sleep.” This is saying how even of you could force your child to sleep earlier, they would naturally fall asleep later, and still wake up no earlier in the morning. This connects to the claim saying school should have a later start time because teens need about nine hours of sleep, rather than adults, who only need about 7-8 hours of sleep, and even if parents tell children to go to sleep earlier, they are still more likely to wake up later in the morning. Not only this, but according to “Bright and Early...or Not?”…
