On July 20, 1989 ( the 20th anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon) President George Bush made an announcement claiming his intention of supporting a program of manned exploration of the solar system and the permanent settlement of space, known as the Space Exploration Initiative ( SEI). One of its major goals was to build a space station as a stepping stone for humans to return to the Moon and someday send them to Mars. (U.S.Cong., 2005) Back then and now one thing has stayed the same which is that there has been many discourse about this controversial science topic pros and cons of humans exploration of Mars. There has been many discussion …show more content…
The major issue being people feel that there other pressing matters that need scientist need to pay attention to rather than focusing on trying to get to Mars. An example, some feel that the scientist should focus on observing Earth, because due to neglect an aging fleet of Earth orbiting satellites is leading to a significant degradation of human ability to measure changes in Earth’s climate. However, some believe that if NASA diverts its attention and resources not to a mission to Mars, but a mission to establish a moon base that it will solve this current issue (Baum, R. M., 2007). Another major issue that has people question if going to Mars is the right decision is the risk of human life. In space the astronauts are sometimes put in unexpected and dangerous situations where they can end up losing their life. And if they don’t lose their life they can surely end up becoming mentally unstable. Imagine having to be in a confined space, without being able to see family or friends, for three years and nine months to go to a planet where no one knows really anything about for a year and a half and then having to go back to Earth, which takes a another three years and nine months, all while being in constant danger during those nine years(Weed, W. S., 2001, page 2) Not only that, but people are worried by …show more content…
First, if scientists are able to go to Mars they may discover findings that may help with current issues on Earth. In the example used before on how humans are not fully aware of Earth’s climate change and what is happening, a mission to Mars will help in that situation, because Mars is the planet most similar to Earth in regards to climate change, especially the loss of water and atmospheric gases (Horneck, G., 2008). Also, there might be the possibility that some other scientific discoveries that was made on Mars can help resolve issues that we would not be able to do on Earth, like maybe due to resources. The other major issue that have people concerned about a mission to Mars is the risk of loss of life. With technology advancements being developed this will hopefully settle that issue, and the knowledge that everything has a risk and sometimes you have to take that risk and hope for the
