He believes that people have predestined lives and they cannot change our faith no matter how much they covet to. They are expected to move through life in several pre-determined stages, assigned to us by greater beings that watch us for their own amusement. Jacques says, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players” (Shakespeare 259). Jacques is saying that we are on a stage and typically when people talk about a stage; they are talking about a place where an actor or a dancer puts on a performance that is planned out and has to be executed perfectly or it will not have the same effect. Life is not like a stage due to the fact that people do not need to be and are not made to be perfect. They can choose to act however they choose, whenever they prefer to. People have free will. Free will is the belief that we are able to manufacture our own decisions without a superior being controlling our decisions. I believe as humans, we have free will and we do generate our own decisions. We can be unpredictable and not always produce the best decision, but we do have free will and that’s what makes us human. We are not limited to the stages that Jacques mentions, even if they have changed since this soliloquy in Shakespeare’s play was written. Jerome is wrong in stating the world is a stage, because we are not performers, we are people with free will and have an independent decision making process that is controlled by not any superior or extraterrestrial being.
