Tragedies that take place on school grounds send shockwaves through communities. This brings up the argument of whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry a firearm. This topic appeals to me, not because I am a huge advocate for guns, but because safety on school grounds should be of the utmost importance. S.B. No. 11 is an act that was made into law that pertains to the “carrying of handguns on the campuses of and certain other locations associated with institutions of higher education. However, the institution of higher education in this state may establish rules, regulations, or other provisions concerning the storage of hand guns in dormitories or other residential facilities” and the president of the institution “may establish reasonable rules, regulations, or other provisions regarding the carrying of concealed hand guns by license holders on the campus of the institution”. In layman's terms, any person with a concealed weapons permit may bring a concealed weapon to their college campus. Police simply cannot walk on to a crime scene and know exactly where the shooter is or what is going on. Officers also cannot get there faster than a weapon can be unloaded. The concrete permanence of guns when in the wrong hands is something that should not be taken lightly; nor should be a situation that involves children, being around firearms.
