Same Sex Marriage Should Be Legal

Same-sex marriage has been a hot topic with the media lately. Ever so often you hear another state make same-sex marriage legal. Every new overruling is a win for the LGBT community, and a lost to conservatives. In this day and age, you would think gay marriage would be okay, but there are still people out there that still bring religion into politics. Our government was set up to have a separation of church and state by the Establishment Clause. I believe the federal government should have the power to decide if same-sex marriage should be legal. In the end, the federal government has more power over everything else. The Commerce Clause gives the federal government more authority over state power and restricts states’ power to regulate. Some states will be more conservative than others. So they will refuse to legalize same-sex marriage. If national authority would impose national standards on the states, the states would have no choice but allow it. If a couple is married in a state that recognizes same-sex marriage their union should be recognized by other states. It is their right to have the same benefits that a heterosexual couple has. By allowing same-sex marriage it will help reduce intergroup prejudice and supporting culturally diverse society. It also promotes family stability for same-sex couples. Around the country over a million children are being raised by same sex couples. Many of these couples are denied the right to get married in the state they currently reside in. This denial of rights can hinder the children the protection afforded children in traditional families. It also sends a terrible message to kids who have same-sex parents that their parents are inferior to everyone else in
