Currently in the United States an estimated of 70 million firearms were added to American arsenals the past two decades, according to a new landmark study on gun ownership. Overall, Americans own an estimated 265 million guns – more than one gun for every American adult, according to the study by researchers at Harvard and Northeastern universities. Half of those guns – about 133 million – were in the hands of just 3% of American adults, so-called “super owners” who possessed an average of 17 guns each, it showed. In 2014, about 42,000 Americans killed themselves and at least half of them did so with guns. This reveals how dangerous it is to just sell guns to people without at least checking their background, maybe even their financial problems to find any clue that might lead that person to use the gun for undesirable purposes. Having a more organized gun sale and control would reduce these unfortunate rates.
Finally, lessening gun availability for Americans would make crime and violence less prone in the streets of the United States. Research shows that the mere presence of weapons increases aggression, in other words, having a plain and uncomplicated way to get a hold of a weapon stimulates violence. So restricting this would lessen the problem of violence in the US.
