The Importance Of Confidentiality In A School

If a student were to enter into my office, as a School Psychologist, the first thing I would do is intervene. I would ask the student in-depth questions to ensure that the student is not in any harm, has no intentions of harming someone else, or has not been abused. The following actions assist school psychologist because these are our limits to confidentiality. Having said that, if the student has intentions of informing me of one of the following without parent consent I would be subjected to losing my job, being called to the court, and even worse losing my license if anything happens to the student following our brief meeting. However, I will do my best to keep our conversations to myself. I will then stabilize the student so that they will be able to leave my office emotionally stable and not in distress. I will also give the student tools to function outside of our counseling session in case I am unable to be reached. Allow the student to know we will get through this, but they have to put in the effort to develop strength to overcome adversity. Next I will facilitate understanding by attempting to restore the student back to their pre-crisis level. This will be accomplished by building rapport with the student. Understanding the student’s point of view of their individual relationship with each parent, without focusing on the negative. The negative being that their parent’s have grown apart from each other. I will also focus attention to the child’s self-esteem, because children self blame. They believe that a divorce is their fault. When they feel the urge to cry take the time to sit and think why you are crying, when you are yelling at your mom for forgetting to record a television show take the time to interpret it. Realize that you are not angry and the action but the student is overwhelmed by many other events going on. Following facilitating understanding I will assist the student in problem solving. We will make a parallel plan that will assist the student when they are coping with the events by themself. This will be assessed through multiple questions that should be posted where the student can find them. How do you continue living? Be specific when determining how you are going to survive the day. How do you maintain connectedness with your parents? How are you going to communicate feelings/needs/thoughts? Reassure the student that these answer may not come to you right away but as they work through the problem things will become more clearer. Life will become easier and they will be able to understand the events better. Before the session is over I will then move into the encourage self reliance
