Should The Sorcerer's Stone Be Treated With Great Caution?

Decent Essays
In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a character named Dumbledore says,"The truth... it is a beautiful and terrible thing, and therefore should be treated with great caution." This statement relates closely to my life, especially with many of my relationships. With family, friends, and even in intimate relationships, the truth should most certainly be treated with great caution.
My friend, Corbyn, has many great qualities, and some negatives. Firstly, he is nice. Corbyn has more empathy than any other person that I know, and is very knowledgeable on how to diffuse situations, or to excite them. He is not one to be an extrovert, however one on one he has great charismatic capabilities. He knows his way around a lie, however.

Do you like being lied to, or can you imagine a society where truth was more common than lies? “Honor truth by word and deed” is especially needed and valuable to our society today, because not many people appreciate being lied to, either in words or actions. If telling the truth was a modern chivalry code rule, then as a society we would see a dramatic rise in healthy relationships. Friendships, couples, marriages, and marriages could trust each other more and know what they have been told is true. Actions would become more trustworthy because people would no longer be able to lie their ways out of situations.…

Winston describes how the party alters data, stating “The process of continuous alteration was applied...to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold...significance” (39). The Party takes initiative to remove information that contradict Ingsoc’s views. The Ministry of Truth rewrites any article documenting Big Brother’s misjudgement; this gives the impression that Big Brother is omniscient. Winston attempts to recall past memories, settling with the statement “When there were no external records you could refer to, even the outline of your own life lacked sharpness” (30). Winston’s thoughts about the Party controlling the past, coupled with his previous quotes about his recollection, offers important insight into how the Party controls its members.…

Throughout the course of one’s life, there are many trials and tribulations with being loyal and receiving loyalty from others. The struggle with staying honest to one’s self and others is a human incompetence that arises from the indirect psychological warfare society and the media wages against individuals. The futuristic society found in George Orwell’s 1984 can be examined to reveal a deep message about what it means to be human by analyzing the characters of Winston Smith, O’Brien, and Julia. The three-pronged betrayal between the three dynamic characters will demonstrate the fragility of loyalty and the efficiency of psychological manipulation to break that loyalty. Winston Smith exemplifies all the characteristics of an observant and…

Most evil people in the world are described as being liars, but does this does not make all lies evil. Everyone lies and surely not everyone in the world is evil. Most people begin to lie at age four, but no one would call an innocent child evil. Many people would argue that people lie because they solely want to be deceitful, but not all lies are as simple as that. Stephanie Ericsson in The Ways We Lie discusses many different types of lies, and why people tell these types of lies.…

Are humans to fragile to handle the direct truth? In Emily Dickinson’s poem “ Tell all the truth but tell it slant” she say’s to tell all the truth; however, to tell it at an angle. Hence, the only successful way to tell a lie is to do it in a fashion of circuitously, because the power of the truth is to powerful for people’s perceptions. Thus, truth would be too hard to understand or would cause one to become overwhelmed. Indeed, just as children are told not to fear lighting to lessen their fear.…
