I chose to take part in a town council meeting pertaining to Virginia’s curfew. This is a town council meeting that addresses the concerns of juvenile crime a motion originated by the Civic League Leaders to help the police stop juvenile crimes that have been occurring in the state of Virginia by juvenile’s mainly at night time hours. The city council is voting on a proposal to expand it’s curfew to include 17 year olds. Of course the teenagers aren’t going to like this but it’s for their own protection as well as their parents and the community. The police receive at least 20 911 calls a night pertaining to teens causing trouble, being rowdy, selling drugs, fighting, drinking, and hanging out on street corners all after curfew hours and are in need of some help to …show more content…
Some argued that the curfew violates the minor’s rights to the pursuit of happiness, due process and equal protection under the freedom of speech law as well as violet the parent’s rights to raise their teenager’s and parents also feared that with this curfew in place the minorities would be targeted the …show more content…
I think that parents should be happy that someone besides them care about the well-being of their children and are trying to protect them from harming their selves or others harming them. And parents should also understand that the police have a hard time as it is without having to apprehend them and bring them home or to the police station until their parents are notified. This to me is a great idea as well as a great way to stop some of the crime occurring after hours that involve
