Intervention: Scores can direct the counselor to appropriate interventions that may be used (Snyder, 1979). The MSI-R assists clients in communicating about a wide range of relational issues, thus enhancing communication abilities (Whiston, 2013). It can also assist in goal setting (Buckentine, Luciano, & Mills, 2006).
c. Outcome measure: The instrument can be re-administered when terminating counseling to assess the effectiveness of marital/couples therapy, as well as, to assess the progress the couple has made in therapy (Buckentine et al., 2006).
II. Standardization
a. Norm Group: The norming group of the MSI-R is based on 2009 study conducted by Whisman, Snyder and Beach (2009). It was conducted on 1020 intact couples (2040 individuals). The study stratified the sample to resemble the U.S. population as it relates to geographical region, education, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity (Whiston, 2013).

a. Setting: The instrument is primarily utilized in a clinical setting, both in individual and couples therapy (Whiston, 2013).
