Should The Combat Exclusion For Women In The Military

The fight for equality is a never ending struggle in the life of a woman. This pertains to when she seeks a job, when she seeks an education, when she seeks fairness around her and when she wants to serve in combat roles in the US military. Women were allowed to join the US military in 1918 where they served as nurses and helped aid wounded soldiers. This is a different generation, a generation where women desire to be more than just nurses and wish to fight. The problem is that many people believe that women shouldn’t be able to serve in combat roles. Sources such as “Maintain the Combat Exclusion for Women in the Military,” “Lifting Barriers Makes the Military Stronger,” “Marine corps experiment tests women for combat duty,” and “The Truth …show more content…
The article “Exclusion for Women in the Military” states “Adding women creates more danger for everyone and risks compromising missions.” During a battle, you have to precise and fast, many people believe that women can’t keep up with men and will put the whole unit in danger by holding them back. The article “Exclusion for Women in the Military” continues and says “Even on lower fitness standards, women have far higher rates of injury, illness, non-availability, non-deployability and attrition than men.” This source shows us what many generals, soldiers, superiors and some women think about women fighting combat roles. They believe that women are a nuisance to men and this is why they shouldn’t be allowed to fight in combat roles in the US military. Their thoughts may be valid but “it no longer makes sense to divert a woman to a lesser job when she might be the combat officer who saves a platoon.” (Brenda Sue) Women are just as equal to men, despite many people’s beliefs. Also, women are capable enough to save a wounded soldier, to lead a unit to safety and to help win a battle. The prejudice beliefs of others are what is holding women back from reaching their full potential. Thus, women aren’t holding anyone else back except themselves because people believe they shouldn’t fight in combat roles in the US

“US military commanders repeatedly used women to go into battle spaces where men could not go” (Malrine par. 39). It’s understandable going into the situation thinking that you’re going to be all fist fight and one on one fighting, but when I think of the military no I think of guns and long range tactics to further protect our soldiers. I’m not sure many men would agree that men and women think alike, ladies, think back to the last time a guy said something that just made you mad but they didn’t seem to understand why you were mad. Imagine getting information from other countries. Women know how to talk to women.…

McGregor also adds that beyond helping with that issue having women in different parts of the military will being diversity into the military. I agree with this statement because in today’s world we like to follow the saying, “Out with the old and in with the new.” As you can see the author, Jenna McGregor, has good facts to go along her topic but not always good explanation. After reading and analyzing her writing I can see that there are problems with the way women are being treated in the military, but with people taking control this is slowly coming to an end. After reading this essay I think we can all agree to this statement by Greg Jacob, “women in the military are being held back simply because they are…

In Molly M. Ginty’s article “All Guts, No Glory”, she explores the issue of women serving in combat and the unfair reality that females have faced in the U.S. armed forces. In my opinion I strongly believe that women should be allowed to participate in combat. Many reasons why are if she signed up for this and has all the right training for it she should be allowed to go into war and fight for our country the same way men do. Women put their life at risk the same way males do getting shipped out to different countries protecting our country. In the article it says “one of the most dangerous jobs in the military today is driving a truck – a position that many women hold.”…

The women who argue to be able to serve in combat are not acknowledging the danger it puts themselves and the United States Military in. In the article,“Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S Infantry.”, Serrano expresses that if they allowed women to serve in combat during her service in the military, anyone including herself would have jumped at the opportunity because of the novelty, excitement, and challenge; but, her views have changed with the experience and knowledge she has gained. Everyone needs to accept the fact that women are different, not only physically, but all around. It will only destroy the mission of the services (Para. 1). Also, allowing women to serve in infantry will cause enormous amounts of distractions.…

They are too sensitive at times, distracting, and they give birth to the children. These are only a few of the arguments used to justify why women would not be as useful in the army. Men use war to prove how masculine they are and by adding women to the equation it would make it harder for them to do that. Even women being nurses during war wasn’t acceptable at first, until all the male nurses were called to fight in war. (Paul Schue Lecture).…

“ Women are qualified for war. They would just have to work that much harder to be able to meet that goal. They would have to carry 100 pounds on their backs and would have to be able to go across the landscape with all this gair and are known to most likely not make it. Women are often great shooters but cant carry 50-80 pounds on them and is much harder on women to carry this amount of weight even with men carry more weight” (Westernjournalism) No girl can just go to war and expect to be able to do everything the boys can do.…

Combat Leadership Women currently make up more than 14% of the 1.4 million active military personnel but were not allowed to serve in over 230,000 combat positions; despite that they have increasingly served at the front lines (Goudreau, 2013). In 2013, the U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta decided to allow women to serve in military combat roles, reversing a 1994 policy that excluded women from serving in combat units. This ensures that the best person is in a leadership position regardless of their sex. For instance, if the best sniper is a woman, it should be her in that role. On the contrary, some people believe that women are not physically built like men, attempts to integrate them may lead to lowered standards overall.…

Even though military women are told that they are not able to handle being in combat physically like men are, they show they are capable of showing themselves worthy. Lisa Grossman states in her article, "The Right to Fight: Women at War," how combat roles are now open to women. Grossman discusses that, “Rather than requiring that an applicant be male and reach certain physical requirements, the job description may specify that applicants should be able to lift a specific weight of ammunition, or throw a grenade a set distance…. Under the new US policy, each military department will have to establish new physical standards for each job, which recruits will have to reach regardless of gender” (Grossman n.p.). This will allow women the same…

Controversy on the Front Lines Women should be allowed to fight on the front lines. Women should fight on the front lines because, they have taken part in war efforts already, they fought for their own right to vote, and if they fit the position there should be no reason for them not to. From the beginning women have had some role in war. Whether it be staying at home, being a single parent, or enlisting and helping where they are told.…

To me, letting women fight on the front line would let them live a dream or continue on a tradition their family started. Currently women are not allowed into some of the positions that men are, according to Military Times, over 220,000 jobs are still not available for women, most of the jobs being in “Army and Marine Corps infantry and armor units.” CNN mentions that “The strongest opposition comes from Special Operations forces. In December 2015, 85% of them believed women should stay away from Special Operations jobs altogether (and 70% opposed serving with them in individual units, citing their inferior mental and physical strength).” There are approximately 1.4 million men and women in the military, but out of those 1.4 there are only 38 women ranked as four star officers or general/admiral,…
