It makes sense to ban books for this reason in certain circumstances, but not in high schools. By the time a student is in their high school years, they should know their own limits and should be able to differentiate between books that they feel comfortable reading and books they do not. They can be held accountable for what they choose to read. Rational arguments have been given as to why many of the books with explicit content should be banned. These reasons are logical to some extent, if focus is placed on protecting students from profanity or ideas and opinions that do not reflect good moral standards. But to what point will this continue? Should students not be aware of the less desirable things in our society? Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas stated, "Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us" (as cited in ALA, n.d.). Banning books restricts thought. It allows the mind’s infinite capacity to become bordered and contained. At some point, students will be faced with an unfavorable situation, and if they were sheltered from every bad thing imaginable for their entire childhood, they won’t know what to do. So, it doesn’t make sense to ban books because of explicit content. Books that contain content perceived as inappropriate because of controversial and explicit content are not necessarily bad. They can help the reader to grow and develop as a person, and they can help them to form opinions and beliefs based on what they learn through reading various books. People that write books have the right to let their work be seen and read, banning books is disallowing them this right. When treading societal grounds nowadays, it is very important that beliefs and standards are personal and are based on knowledge gathered by each individual. Not allowing certain books the fall into the hands of high schoolers could lead to them being mislead and manipulated. This has been in effect in America today, there are many people in this situation who make bad decisions that could have been avoided if they had the correct information.
