Should Students Have to Take Math Classes Up To Algebra II In High School?

Taking higher level math classes in high school has been a controversial topic for quite a few years now. Should students really be required to take such difficult math courses, even when what they want to do after high school doesn't require classes such as calculus? Throughout a students high school career - they are put under large amounts of stress between homework for 6+ classes, spending time with family, working after school, and extracurricular activities (clubs, sports, etc.). Managing all of these things for students fourteen to eighteen years old can be a challenge. So do students really need to be required to take four years of college level math in high school? Math as a general term is very essential to everyday life. Being able to pay bills, do taxes, manage money intelligently, make measurements and other various things that people all over the world have to do everyday to just get by. Most high schools don't teach these basic life skills anymore. They've been replaced by classes such as calculus. Don't get me wrong, taking these uppity, high level

Even for students that get to their junior year and still want nothing to do with college. They should still try to challenge themselves just incase they do change their minds, like all students will. Many students struggle with math, and many dislike it so much to the point where they will cease to try and understand it. I believe students need a challenge, but I don't believe in pushing kids to their breaking point. Some students will be amazing at one subject and be completely inept in another. This does not mean a student isn't smart, it just means the student has different skills compare to

Some people may believe that students who are book smart allows them to get a higher-earning job and work less. While people who are street smart do not receive a higher-earning job because they do not care about the education offered to them, but only care about what's going on from the outside instead of school. The thought process is like this, someone who is lowly-educated will get more workings hours, while the person who has higher-education will get less work…

Teaching third graders algebra is utterly ridiculous when the teachers are not even allowed to teach and get students to master basics in math and reading. The teachers are given rules on what they must teach and that list is so long that the teachers are not allowed to spend enough time on basics to build a more solid foundation to build on. When as an adult does the average person use algebra? However, everyone uses simple math every single day in paying bills, figuring how much money you have, or how much time until you have to be somewhere. All those things…

The problem with that is that most students don’t learn to their full extent in college. Professors do not challenge students to use their minds and thus causes the students to truly not learn how to use their skills to the best of their ability until they are in real life situations. Students are supposed to gain multiple skills throughout their time at their institution. Skills such as being able to develop new ideas, work with a group of people, and figure out what you are truly passionate…

I agree and disagree with this because, being smart depends on where you grew up or your culture. I disagree with this because anyone can learn the information students learn at school, simply secondhand. If you grew up in a country like the United States of America, then you grew up to schools and PhD’s versus someone who grew up in a continent like Africa…

I believe that the teaching and learning of Algebra and Geometry in high school are of most importance and is some of the most important knowledge you can obtain throughout your life. For the majority of people, math is seen as an unnecessary roadblock in their education. After all, barely anyone in the real world uses math like Algebra and Geometry in their daily life, so why should we bother teaching it. I would argue saying that even if you never use this math ever again in your life, and all it was to you in high school was a failing grade, it still helped you in ways you don't notice. Most students in high school these days see no reason that they are being taught Algebra and Geometry.…

Is Algebra Worth the Work? Recently, I came across an editorial in the New York Times debating the reasoning behind requiring higher-level algebra in high school and college. Written by Andrew Hacker, a teacher at City University in New York since 1971, the article suggests that colleges and high schools shouldn’t actually require algebra in their everyday classes. On a personal note, I couldn’t agree more.…

College freshmen should not be required to take an effective study skills course, because they face academic challenges when they arrive to college. Being away from your friends and family is a big adjustment that a lot of college students face. Requiring an effective study skills class only makes the adjustment harder for freshmen because the class takes up time that could be used to solve the challenges faced as a freshman. If no time is invested to conquer the challenges faced as freshmen, students will have a high chance of dropping out of school and fail classes because they never met their expectations. The success of a student highly depends on how well they adjust to the school socially, and academically.…

A basic skills test is very controversial, it leaves a lot of kids in distress over whether or not they will pass high school. A basic skills exit exam tests you over writing, math, reading, and other skills.
