Should Students Have Communication Classes

Most occupations require some type of human interaction and communication, whether it be going to the bank, sitting through an interview, or even making a phone call. Sadly, many students have a fear of doing those things. Making a simple phone call gives some students anxiety, which is all the more reason to require a communications class to be taken by all students before they graduate. Not only would it teach them how to prepare and give a speech, but also how to communicate with others in different scenarios. A required communications course would benefit all students because it would prepare them for college or the workforce, create valuable life skills, and in some cases, help students get over their fear of public speaking. The speech course currently offered at Royalton High School is offered as an elective and requires students only to research and create different types of speeches. However, a speech class that only looks into research and presentation of speeches may not benefit all students. The required class must look into different scenarios in life when proper communication skills will be necessary and …show more content…
Their fears overtake them and make them unable to cooperate in society. If students cannot handle public communication, the truth is that most companies and businesses will not want to hire them. They want fearless staff who can handle making a conference call, writing up well written e-mail, sitting through a meeting, and handling themselves in a public setting where debate and discussion may be prominent. A high school communications class would teach the students who fear speaking how to manage their fear enough to be successful in society. Fearful students would be expected to examine their fear and develop ways that they can manage it when a situation presents itself that would cause anxiety.
