Should Students Be Required To Learn English

UGH! Foreign language, it is another one of those courses in which is required for high school for 2 whole years in order to get into a decent college. This is not right and there are so many reasons why. It is a waste of time, because it won’t benefit the student, and they could be taking other courses that would actually benefit them. Students shouldn’t be forced to take a foreign language for years, because, the immigrants should be forced to learn english, we probably won’t need it in the future, and it's not working very well as a course.

Foreign language skills is also something that you highly most likely will not need in the future. The only time you would need to know it is if you are moving to a foreign country. As known, most colleges require 2 year of a foreign language. Let's say you come across someone, who is Spanish, and they don't speak English. Taking 2 years of a

Here we have so many mexicans, and other immigrants in america who don’t know how to speak english. I think the schools main goal here is to learn a foreign language so we can speak to the people in the united states who don’t know english. Who are we to learn their language. This is America, and here we speak english. If they want to come over here, fine, but they need to learn english, because thats our language.
So in conclusion, the facts have been stated that students shouldn't be required to take 2 years of a foreign language as a requirement. Students should make their own decisions with classes like that, because in the future, they won't need to use the skill, if they can even remember it. Foreign language is just a course in my opinion that is there just to say " our student can speak a foreign language". If you want to learn it, do it later on after high school where you're not forced to, because chances being, you will forget what you

While I can see why immigrants should be required to learn English, it is unnecessarily discriminatory to those without access to classes in which to learn it. If we as a country decide to require immigrants to know English, we should also provide free and accessible classes. But since America hates to spend money on anything other than the military, and especially immigrants, I don’t see this happening. Most learn English upon arrival anyway, as…

Though the Bilingual Act has been amended and changed since 1968, it is undeniable that is has shaped the way that we deal with the needs of our immigrant students nationwide. It helped to bankroll the creation of bilingual education mechanisms in all 50 states. This, in turn, has led to the increased success for immigrant students who are now given the tools to both learn English and succeed in the US. Unfortunately, bilingual education today has transitioned from an emphasis on teaching both the student’s native language and English to a system which emphasizes assimilation and learning English as fast as possible. This is due to our state’s heightened focus on standardized tests rather than the student’s individual…

Even though one common language is important in the connection of this country, the other languages must not go without value. Even though there seems to be a popular “American” culture, the other cultures and values must not go without consideration. All deserve fair representation and opportunities within the public schools as well as in everyday life. As Herschel T. Manual states, “We must courageously attack the difficult problems of building a united community and adjusting education to the needs of children who come to us with differences which challenge our best efforts” (Manuel 639). Through bilingual education, students can feel value in their native language and culture while simultaneously learning English.…

Languages: Are fewer actually better? In his article, “Why English should be the official language of the United States”, well known columnist, Brandon Brice (2014), argues how an official language would enhance immigrants to learn the language, while improving immigrants’ and American’s lives. The author highlights how not having an official language has negatively affected the country, consequences that are intensifying, as immigration rates continue to increase. In addition, such immigrants are not feeling the necessity to learn English, especially Spanish speakers who are instead spreading their language.…

If I were to move to Russia, the government would require me to learn Russian, however if I were to move to Japan there’s no requirement to learn Japanese; I would be relying on other forms of communication to go about my life. This is the case in many areas around the United States and most noticeably in Miami. Declaring English as a requirement instead of a suggestion will not only improve bilingualism but also increase productivity for foreign born…

One of the biggest topics in the media and politics today is immigrants. Many travel to the United states for miles and days in order to be part of the “American Dream”. Some of these people who decide to migrate and risk their lives are not only parents but also children ranging from months old to teenagers. “California has over 25,000 undocumented students graduating from California high schools each year” (Underground Undergrads, 3). For the kids who end up being students in the Untied States, they end up growing up in a system where they believe they will have a chance in attending a higher education like their peers.…

In the meantime, as long as there is no viable pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are without substantial means and lack of reforms continue to practically nonexistent, illegal immigrants will remain in a limbo. On the other hand, many American citizens have a difficult time dealing with and accepting people who speak a language other than English in the United States. I think that immigrants should learn how to speak English, because if you going to stay in America, you need to learn English because majority of the people in the US speak English. I think it would be cool to be able to speak multiply of different languages. Living in America is a privileged not a right. It has always been an issue, many immigrants still do not know the basic and key valuable words in the English vocabulary. According to the U.S Census Bureau, “In 2012, 44 percent of the foreign-born population age 5 and older who arrived in the United States in 2000 or later reported high English-language speaking ability,” which is only 35% and 9.6% could not speak it at all.…

All immigrants should be required to learn to read and write English well, so they can have the same opportunities as everyone else. Living in America and not knowing how to speak English causes multiple complications. Some of the complications are not being able to read labels on prescription pills, menus in a restaurant, chemicals in products, and not understanding agreements in renting a house or in preceding surgical procedures. In the article from CNN, Kennedy proclaims, “Learning English shouldn’t be an option for new immigrants – it should be enshrined in the experience of making them Americans” (1). I agree with Kennedy because immigrants come to America for better opportunities, but if immigrants do not know English well then they just moved to America for no apparent reason and cheated themselves of their opportunities.…

Bilingualism isn’t something that people should be making others have or taking away from others, people should choose to have or not have it. Of course many people have different ideas of what Bilingualism is. For Espada, he believes that people should not be made to be bilingual, or to lose their own culture. For Rodriguez, on the other hand, he believes that it is a lot more convenient to become bilingual with a public language like English. Even if somebody looses their private languages culture.…

Language, a very pressing matter in our globalized society seems to be more and more of a controversial topic as time progresses. Continents with diverse environments seem to be having the hardest time with mutual intelligibility and for purposes of unification discuss ways to make do with what they are able with translators. Diverse places with plans such as the English-only movement in the United States intend to make English the sole language, although not the entirety of the United States sides with this policy and it still hasn’t passed through congress, the purpose of the bill is still debatable. Similarly, the European Union also shares North America’s diverse society but’s view on its language and cultures seem to have more care for…
