Should students be measured by growth or by proficiency? There are many different ways students could be graded and evaluated in school. The problem is that we cannot agree on which way is the best to help student learn. Should students be graded by growth or proficiency, or is there a whole different way they should be assessed in school. The way students are graded and evaluated in school can change how they live and act for the rest of their lives. That is why there is so much controversy on how they she be graded. Grading by growth helps teachers and other academic employees see how much each individual student has learned throughout the year. Students that are usually honest and trustworthy are put in a position where they may make decisions that are contrary to their usual personality. Instead of doing an assignment and actually learning it, they may copy the work of peers or look up the answers. “In a class with no grades, students never have a reason to cheat. There’s no punishment awaiting them, if something isn’t done.”(Brilliant or Insane) If there were no grades, students would ultimately have no reason to cheat or look up grades. Grades also rank kids and make them feel negative about themselves. In a no-grade system, students evaluate themselves on what they need to improve, rather than someone else telling them. “In a class driven by conversation and narrative feedback, learning becomes a conversation.”(Brilliant or Insane) In a class like that, a student would not be graded on an assignment because it is a class about discussions. Grades may not help a student in every aspect of school, but grades do give students a better understanding of where they excel and where they underachieve. When students are having a rough time in school, knowing exactly where they are underachieving can help them switch their focus.
