Should Students Be Allowed To Have Background Checks In Schools

Improved Essays
I believe that teachers and other officials at the school should be required to have background checks frequently and also be trained on how to fire weapons. They should also be trained on how to protect the students in case of a school shooting. Every teacher, if they meet the requirements, should be able to keep a handgun and ammunition in a safe place that is close to them at all times, whether it be on their hip in a holster, a desk drawer, a cabinet, or some other place. I do not believe the students should be allowed to carry their weapons around school, due to a student possibly getting mad and firing their weapon at someone else. Most shootings happen at schools or places like schools that have rules that make it to where you cannot

If teachers have access to the weapons, an intruder could also gain access only increasing the potential for violence. Concealed handguns in the schools would be kept in a secure area and teachers and administrators would have strict procedures in carrying the gun on school grounds. There would be more responsibility for the teachers and administrators, but in order to protect students teachers would welcome new regulations. The battle continues in state legislatures across the country.…

Much of the authority over whether to allow guns in schools rests at the state and local levels. In Ohio, school boards are allowed to arm school personnel but are not required to notify the public that they have done so. In some states, teachers and other employees can carry a gun without anyone’s knowledge, including that of school authorities, so long as they hold a valid concealed-carry permit. No one knows how many schools in the United States have armed teachers or staff members. It was a free three day gun class in Rittman k-12 public school employees offers by the Buckeye Firearms.…

All the mass shootings have happened in places where the law made it a gun free zone making people not able to carry a concealed weapon even on duty guard or police officer. I know the law is to take gun out of children hands and put them in to professional hands but with this law there is no way that a school guard or teacher can protect themselves and their student with this I makes the teachers put their lives in danger of protecting their students with their bodies so that the students don’t get shot. The last school shooting that happened in Parkland, Florida. Was a horrible thing to happen but if they would have maybe concerned to allow certain teacher that are trained with gun can get training with gun to able to stop this situation from happen. The shooter was free to do anything he wanted because he knew that he didn’t need to worry about some defending themselves with gun.…

Dear Lamar Times Editor, April 13, 2018 We are students at Purvis Middle School and we would like to talk about an argument that we feel strongly about, which is the topic of arming teachers. Recently people have been talking about arming teachers. People say that this will lead to less school shootings and it might, but there's more to this than people realize and it will be a lot harder said than done. Have you ever thought of the teachers position? How would the teachers feel?…

S.B. No. 11 is an act that was made into law that pertains to the “carrying of handguns on the campuses of and certain other locations associated with institutions of higher education. However, the institution of higher education in this state may establish rules, regulations, or other provisions concerning the storage of hand guns in dormitories or other residential facilities” and the president of the institution “may establish reasonable rules, regulations, or other provisions regarding the carrying of concealed hand guns by license holders on the campus of the institution”. In layman's terms, any person with a concealed weapons permit may bring a concealed weapon to their college campus. Also, the president of the campus can set up rules and regulations for the concealed weapons as long as they don't establish any rules that will ban the weapons.…

One topic has been ripping through America, resurfacing every couple months after another tragic event — Shootings. The type of shooting that I fear most take place where I am required to attend 5 days a week, 10 months of the year — school. The idea of teachers being allowed to have guns rattles me more. How do teachers being armed prevent school shootings? In fact, looking at recent news stories teachers having guns becomes an apparently bad idea.…

What I think... Teachers should not have guns because what if a kid got caught in a crossfire of the guns. Another reason that teachers should not carry guns is like at a high school kids if they got left in a room Unattended and the teacher the the gun in the desk and the kid knew it and the kid got ahold of the gun. Then that would end in disaster. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that what if a student had been constantly annoying and being disrespectful and the teacher finally just snapped and shot the kid, that would send the teacher to jail and the kid either to heaven or to the hospital. Another reason that teachers should not have guns is that teachers are there to teach the kids not be a security guards or a babysiter.…

In an age where people are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens; we need our guns now more than ever. Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

The fact that the firearms are concealed is crucial. Since the handguns are concealed, a criminal would be unable to detect whether a classroom has armed staff or not (Crime Prevention Research Center). Students who are nervous when seeing firearms wouldn't be scared because the handguns would be hidden. President Trump advises school boards to protect the staff of each district with insurance to reduce the risk of liability, which should put those with concern for the staff at ease (“Arming Teachers and School Staff”).…

Some may support neither carrying weapons, but school violence needs to…

If a student’s intent on hurting people they would know who would have a gun and how to get it. Also school officials are not the police, they have not been trained for these types of situations and can do more harm than good. The police can respond calmly than someone who is not used to being in these situations. Teachers should not be leaping in and start shooting away trying to fight the attacker, they should be trying to get the students away safely. More guns being fired is not the solution in a mass shooting and would likely bring more casualties and be harmful than intended originally.…

Over the past few years there has been an escalation in the use for guns. One reason for why this might be happening is because the guns are being used for mass school shootings, such as: the Sandy Hook shooting, the Parkland shooting, and many others that people don't even know about. This problem has now caused a controversy over whether teachers should carry guns while working in school or not. Many people believe that the only way to defend children during these shootings is if the staff carry guns. Although this idea seems to have many great advantages against shooters, it also opens room for more issues involving the children and the teachers.…

These teachers should go through the most intensive background check because they have the ability to hurt a lot more kids than a random person trying to shoot up a school. If the teachers can get a hold on a gun and then tell the guy with the gun that every class is packed and ready to shoot then I believe the maniac will come to his senses and get out of the school. I feel the same way about guns in the workplace. For example at my mom's shop, she was looking at the cameras and someone was breaking into a truck late at night and instead of my mom having a gun for self-defense at her work place she had to take cover as the robber shot a bullet in her direction. This is why I feel so strongly about gun rights and where you can and can't take them.…
