Texas will be one of eight states to allow the carrying of concealed weapons on public college campuses, joining Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin . There are still areas that are considered “Gun-free zones” where guns are banned. The law will take effect on August 1st, 2016 . The law will also allow community colleges in Texas the right to have a concealed firearm on campus starting in 2017 . Private and independent colleges have the option of whether or not they want to allow the concealed carry of firearms on campus, while public colleges have no say in the matter and have to allow firearms on campus with the right licensing . There are a couple of restrictions on the law that they have to abide by. The person who carries the firearm must be at least 21 years of age . In her opinion piece, Zenobia Harris shows the potential unintended consequences of carrying a firearm on campus. She provides solid statistics from notable organizations such as the RAND Corporation and CNN and a refuting argument from a state legislator. She ends her argument stating that protection of students should be left to the police on campus, and that students should find other means of protection other than firearms. The potential negative outcomes really do seem to outweigh the positive aspects of carrying a firearm on…
