In the last few years, there have been many news reports pertaining to the injury or death of student athletics as they are playing sports. Many of these reports, once investigated, have said that the cause of death was the use of drugs, drug overdose, or complications stemming from the use of drugs. Therefore, many of us believe that the school or district has a responsibility to random drug test student athletics as a requirement to participating in any sporting activity.

I, along with many others, believe that all teens should be drug tested because anytime they are playing sports, drugs can get someone hurt or they can have allergic reaction to the drugs. If a teen is on drugs and playing sports, they are not able to focus as well on what they are doing and could cause someone else to

The energy the teens have while doing drugs are not the same they had prior to doing drugs. If you are taking certain drugs or medication, your body could overheat and cause a heat stroke or even death. Taking certain drugs can enlarge the heart and could cause damage to certain organs. According to the Justices of the Vernonia School District v. Acton Supreme Court case, “Students who voluntarily participate in school athletics have reason to expect intrusions upon normal rights and privileges, including privacy” (646). As the ruling indicates, student athletes are already required to follow school rules and discipline, get a physical exam, obtain insurance coverage, and maintain a minimum GPA. In addition, numerous student athletes must be willing to use locker rooms to shower and change their clothes, further reducing their privacy. Mandatory student athlete drug testing may temporarily intrude into a student’s private life, but student athletes already expect to give up certain privacy rights and freedoms in order to participate in a school sport. In any case, mandatory student athlete drug testing is designed to keep the student safe and away from drugs, not to limit the student athlete’s…

Although schools could be testing the wrong group of people, schools should drug test their athletes because it has been proven effective, it can help spread awareness, and it does not go against the Fourth Amendment. Drug testing programs in schools are very controversial because they are often coercive; testing students before allowing them to participate in sports and other activities may deter or limit them from opportunities critical to their development. Mandatory testing is allowed in schools, but it is not looked at favorably: “Although the constitutionality of mandatory drug testing for high school athletes has been affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court (515 U.S. 646, 1995), many students and parents are strongly opposed to these programs” (Manski et al. 203). Not only are the tests skewed, but testing does not measure the level of impairment of an individual as a result of use.…
