Sports: Strength, Success, and Then There are Steroids
Imagine your favorite athlete winning gold in the Olympics but only because they cheated by using steroids. What a horrible way to win! Steroids are ruining the fun and pride in all sports. I personally believe that steroids are just abolishing all athletes’ hard work. First of all, the use of steroids is simply unfair. Additionally, the user of steroids will have to pay fines for using them illegally. Lastly, performance enhancing drugs, are horrible for an athlete’s health. Since steroids work so well, they create an unfair advantage for those who take them, and this breaks the social contract athletes have implicitly agreed to: We are going to have a fair contest,” ( Steroids , Sports, and the Ethics of Winning, paragraph 6). As observed, steroids are substantially breaking the rules . It shows that since steroids are working effectively, the fair contest is now broken. Moreover, if one uses PED, the rest of the competitors are now behind. Just think of all their great hard work go to waste because someone chose to take the easy way out. Nearly 31 percent of users hurt their elbows, versus 17 percent of non-steroid users,”( Scientific American , paragraph 5). This shows that the drugs will actually make them weaker afterwards. The research demonstrates that players who have used steroids have medical deffects. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, steroids can affect an athlete's health permanently. The website states, “ Anabolic steroid abuse may lead to serious, even permanent, health problems such as: kidney problems or failure. liver damage. Enlarged heart, high blood pressure, and changes in blood cholesterol, all of which increase the risk of stroke and heart attack, even in young people,” ( National Institute on Drug Abuse).One can again see how both sources show that steroids are impacting an athlete’s health. Just think of your favorite athlete out of their sport for the whole season because they used steroids.People should not believe that steroids are helping anyone become stronger because in reality it is just gradually making their body rot over time.
