Should Steroids Be Allowed In Sports

Many people are in quarrel on whether steroids should be legal or not pertaining to sports. While some say steroids offer a great new excitement into the sports culture, others say it is a way of cheating and allows an unfair advantage to the game. Although steroids may offer a slight boost in performance, they shouldn’t be allowed. The reason being is because it gives an unfair advantage in playing the game and it also encourages a vicious arms race. Major level sports offer high amounts of money, and because of this many people want to get their hands on it. This is provoking the temptation of doing whatever it takes to get there, which turns athletes to the thought of steroids. Money earned by sports have drastically increased since the 1900s to present day. “The 40 highest-paid athletes of 1995 earned $490 million…The top 40 sports earners this year banked $1.3 billion” (Kurt Badenhausen). Because of the level of competiveness in sports, it is very hard to reach the level in which an athlete will get paid. This is why athletes use PED (physical enhancement drugs). When athletes see amongst themselves that others are using anabolic steroids, they begin to worry about their spot and because of this reason, they begin to use steroids so that no other athlete may surpass them. Another example of arms race in sports would be, “In the Beijing Olympics, swimmers who adopted a polyurethane body suit…won a disproportionate number of medals and shattered world records.
